It’s no surprise that Hollywood frequently adapts science fiction novels into movies. Many famous directors, including Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott, Stanley Kubrick, and Denis Villeneuve, have tried their hand at bringing these stories to life on screen. Now, we’re getting close to the release of one of the most anticipated upcoming sci-fi adaptations.
Andy Weir, the author of the popular novel and film The Martian, has done it again with Project Hail Mary, a thrilling 400+ page science fiction story. Published in 2021, it quickly became a New York Times bestseller. A film adaptation is in the works with a talented team behind it, so now is a great time to read the book if you haven’t already!
Why You Should Read Project Hail Mary Before The Movie Comes Out Next Month
The movie adaptation of Project Hail Mary will hit theaters on March 20th, and is being made by Amazon MGM. It stars Ryan Gosling and is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who are known for their work on franchises like LEGO, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Jump Street, and Spider-Verse. The film reportedly cost $150 million to make.
If you haven’t read it yet, Project Hail Mary is about a man named Ryland Grace who wakes up in space with amnesia. He gradually remembers that the sun is fading and he’s on a desperate mission to save Earth. The story is full of unexpected twists, especially if you’ve avoided spoilers in the book’s trailers.
No matter how quickly you read, you can definitely finish the novel before the movie comes out. With 30 chapters, you just need to read a little over one chapter each day to be done by March 20th. And trust me, once you start, you won’t want to stop! Even as a slow reader, I finished it in about a week.
Andy Weir tells a captivating story in Project Hail Mary that’s hard to put down. The book smoothly shifts between Grace’s present-day space mission and flashbacks to his past. While packed with scientific details, it remains accessible and easy to understand. Grace is a compelling character whose journey is both thrilling, emotionally resonant, and funny.
Some people hesitate to read a book before watching the movie adaptation, worried it will spoil the story and reduce the impact. However, I don’t think that will be a problem for most viewers. In fact, reading the book made me even more enthusiastic about the movie Project Hail Mary, and the trailers show how well Lord, Miller, and Gosling are translating the story to the screen. Early reviews are very positive, suggesting they’ve done a fantastic job.
After reading Project Hail Mary, it’s clear why it’s going to make a fantastic movie and how successful it could be. I was already really looking forward to the 2026 film, but reading the book would have definitely moved it even higher on my list.
