ESPN unveiled modifications to its NBA broadcast crews in preparation for the 2025-26 season on Thursday. One of these alterations includes the promotion of Tim Legler, while Doris Burke receives an extension and a role adjustment, which could be considered as a demotion.
Legler is set to become part of the main NBA team on our network, working alongside Mike Breen (who handles play-by-play commentary), analyst Richard Jefferson, and reporter Lisa Salters.
The specified team is slated to broadcast the 2026 NBA Finals, along with the conference finals, multiple opening and follow-up playoff matches, a special game on Christmas Day, and the NBA Saturday Primetime games on ABC.
In 1996, Legler, once a traveler in the NBA, claimed victory in the league’s three-point shooting competition as part of the All-Star weekend festivities. After hanging up his jersey in 2000, he transitioned to ESPN, where he now serves as an analyst.

Charles Barkley mentioned that him and the ‘Inside the NBA’ team filmed a test episode for a comparable show to air on TNT, while ESPN will begin broadcasting ‘Inside the NBA’ from the upcoming season onwards.
ESPN has not disclosed specifics about Mark Burke’s contract extension, only mentioning that it spans over several years. As per a press statement, Burke will be responsible for calling the entire NBA season and playoff games on both ESPN and ABC, alongside play-by-play commentator Dave Pasch.
Since 1991, Burke has been part of ESPN. In 2023, she joined ESPN’s main NBA broadcast team. During the 2024 NBA Finals, she made history as the first woman to serve as a TV game analyst for a championship-round game in any of the four major U.S. professional men’s sports leagues.
2018 saw Burke honored with the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Basketball Hall of Fame’s Naismith Memorial, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the sport of basketball.
Plaschke: ‘It’s over.’ Bidding farewell to ESPN’s ‘Around the Horn’ with gratitude
Although columnist Bill Plaschke didn’t secure the highest number of wins on ESPN’s “Around the Horn,” he undeniably gained a loving family and devoted followers as well.
It was The Athletic who initially announced in June, just prior to the 2025 Finals, that there was uncertainty about Burke’s continued tenure with the top NBA team. During a press conference preceding Game 1, Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle publicly expressed his backing for Burke.
In his words, “Doris has revolutionized the field of broadcasting for women,” Carlisle stated. He further added that “Doris serves as an inspiring symbol of bravery and stepping up to the plate.
On Thursday, ESPN extended its contract with Jefferson, who joined the network in 2019 and made his debut at the NBA Finals this season.
