As a dedicated fan who has grown up with Tim Allen’s comedic genius, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the news that he is returning to ABC after more than three decades. The iconic actor will star in “Shifting Gears,” a new comedy series that follows his character, Matt, a widower who runs a classic car restoration business.

30-plus years following the initial airing of his famous TV show Home Improvement on ABC, Tim Allen is making a comeback to the same network.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that ABC has recently given the green light for a new comedy series titled “Shifting Gears” from the 71-year-old comedian at ABC.

Normally, series orders are decided during the network’s annual presentations in May. However, it was recently announced that the pilot won’t be filmed until June.

The co-creators and managers of The Simpsons, Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully, have left on good terms. The show is now searching for a new person to oversee its production.

1. The exact start date for the series production remains uncertain, along with a potential premiere time, but it appears that we might expect it sometime during the middle of the season.

1. The show will trace the life of Matt, a widowed man operating a vintage automobile restoration workshop, which is the main character portrayed by Allen.

When his adult daughter Riley (Dennings), accompanied by her teenage kids, returns to live with him, his world is significantly disrupted.

In addition, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell portrays the role of Ed, a veterans-turned-mechanic at Matt’s garage, while Froy Gutierrez takes on the character of Nick – Matt’s son and younger brother to Riley.

I, as a devoted admirer of Nick’s story, would rephrase it this way: Although Nick was known for his work as a “game coder,” he prioritized family obligations over his career and returned home to assist his father at the shop.

Maxwell Simpkins and newcomer Barrett Margolis join the cast, portraying Riley’s kids on screen.

1. On the pilot episode (directed by John Pasquin), the Scully family will continue in their role as executive producers.

Allen will collaborate as an executive producer alongside Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker, Rick Messina, and Pasquin.

1. Among the two comedic pilot shows ABC was working on for the 2024-2025 television season, Shifting Gears was one of them, alongside Forgive and Forget.

Ty Burrell, known for his role in Modern Family, filmed the pilot for a new show in June. However, ABC has decided not to develop that series further.

1. The series centers around Burrell, a man who gets an unanticipated health update, and his quest to mend ties with his grown-up son, Sean Rodriguez Marquette.

1. After Shifting Gears finally becomes a part of the ABC schedule, it will be just one of three comedic shows on the network, with Abbott Elementary and The Conners being the other two. Notably, The Conners is set to conclude its run in 2025.

1. Most recently, Allen has been seen in “The Santa Clauses” and the sitcom “Last Man Standing,” which premiered on ABC in 2011 after six seasons. It was then canceled but later revived by Fox, where it continued for an additional three seasons.
