Tier-one CS returns to Mexico with BLAST Rivals
BLAST Rivals will be the first tier-one Counter-Strike tourney in Mexico since 2017.
BLAST opted for Monterrey, Mexico as the location for the first-ever BLAST Rivals CS:2 tournament, offering a prize pool of $350,000.
On Thursday, January 23rd, I was thrilled to learn that the tournament organizer revealed Monterrey as the destination for BLAST Rivals, right at the start of the BLAST Bounty LAN Finals taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark. What a fantastic surprise!
For Mexican Counter-Strike enthusiasts, this is fantastic news as BLAST Rivals marks the first top-tier competition in the nation since the ECS Season 4 Finals held in Cancun back in 2017.
As a thrilled enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement as we, at BLAST, bring the first-ever BLAST Premier Rivals to Monterrey. This is a monumental moment not just for Mexico, but for all of Latin America! In an official announcement, our VP of Ecosystems, Andrew Haworth, emphasized that this event will be the most significant one ever held in the country, setting a new standard for esports in the region.
BLAST Rivals Season 1 in Monterrey: Format and details
The BLAST Rivals tournament is set to take place from April 30 to May 4 in Monterrey, showcasing eight top-tier CS2 teams globally. Aside from the prize pool of $350,000, an extra $650,000 will be distributed among participants.
Four places will be determined through the Global Valve Ranking System (VRS), while an additional four spots will be allocated to a team from Europe, North America, South America, and Asia respectively. This setup ensures that at least one team from each region makes it, but unfortunately, since there are no open or closed qualifiers for Mexican teams, none of them can qualify for the event.
In the beginning, BLAST Rivals tournament kicks off with a group stage featuring eliminations twice over. Six teams will move on to the playoffs following this phase. The playoff part of the event adopts the traditional single-elimination structure. Most matches, except for the five-game grand finals, will consist of three games each.
For the initial two days, BLAST Rivals won’t host a live audience, but fans can still catch the remaining three days of the competition at the Escenario GNP Seguros, a versatile sports arena situated in Monterrey.
Pre-sales for the BLAST Rivals Season 1 event in Monterrey have begun, with ticket prices varying between $39 and $310.
