Thunderbolts* Left Me With A Major Daredevil: Born Again Question, And I’m So Glad The Director Was Finally Asked About It

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fresh content keeps pouring in, whether it’s on the big screen or through a Disney+ subscription. As we eagerly anticipate future Marvel films, details about past productions continue to emerge. For instance, insights regarding the upcoming film Thunderbolts have been disclosed, with the director explaining why heroes from New York City like Daredevil didn’t play a role in the final battle against The Void.

The lightning-fast sequences impressed audiences at the box office, and the team is ready for a comeback as part of the cast for “Avengers: Doomsday”. Director Jake Schreier recently chatted with CBM about his Marvel movie, expressing interest in connecting it to “Daredevil: Born Again” for fans like me. In his own words:

In our film, it was clear to us. Yet, it often happens in such movies that viewers ask, “Why wasn’t this character present?” Our movie, however, has always felt very self-contained to us, with a multitude of elements that make up its world.

It’s evident that Schreier has been keeping up with the online buzz. For years, fans who have diligently followed Marvel movies in sequence have been eagerly anticipating more crossovers, particularly those involving stories set in New York City. Given the abundance of superheroes living there across MCU films and series, we were hoping to see characters like Daredevil appear in Thunderbolts. Unfortunately, that didn’t come to pass.

The streaming platform of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Disney+, offers plans starting at just $9.99 per month for its new ad-supported option. If you prefer an ad-free experience, you can opt for $15.99 per month or save 16% by pre-paying $159.99 annually. Check it out here: View Deal

In the subsequent part of their discussion, Schreier delved deeper into the reasons behind the limited character count in Thunderbolts, particularly focusing on the climactic scene. He talked about the scope and timeframe of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s rental blockbuster, discussing:

The narrative unfolds over just a few days, making the danger and the problem urgent. Not only did we strive to construct a tale where our villains, the [Thunderbolts], are ideally suited for this role, as it centers around shared goals or empathy towards the protagonist’s plight.

Despite the diverse origins of the Thunderbolts team members from various Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects, the storyline is self-contained and unfolds over a brief period. The sudden attack by The Void on New York City caught everyone off guard, leaving the group of antiheroes insufficient time to summon assistance from local heroes in the city.

Despite the various discussions about it online, the filmmaker appears confident in his decisions regarding the Thunderbolts, including the chosen timeline and refusal to add any additional characters to the mix. In his own words:

In simpler terms, only someone special could have reached that place in such a unique and swift way. The situation was so fleeting and rapid that it didn’t leave room for discussions about martial law or any other complications. All these events unfolded within a single day, which allowed our stories to maintain their individuality without interfering with each other.

I ain’t saying they’re entirely off-base, but when Bob transformed into The Void, his darkness spread like wildfire across New York City. Even if the New Avengers managed to rally the troops, it’s questionable whether any heroes could make it in time. With that in mind, it fell upon Yelena and our ragtag group to lend a hand to this new ally of ours.

In “Avengers: Doomsday”, due on screens on December 18th, 2026, the New Avengers will have opportunities to mix with other superheroes. The closing credits scene of “Thunderbolts” hinted at their encounter with the Fantastic Four, delighting fans. As for the Fantastic Four, their movie titled “First Steps” is scheduled for release on July 25th as part of the 2025 film lineup.
