Thunderbolts* Dominates Box Office, Sinners Holds Strong, Minecraft Movie Nears $400M
It was clear that the Thunderbolts team would unite, particularly in terms of securing the top position at the weekend box office. The only query surrounding the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s group was how much revenue their movie could generate. Unfortunately, the film directed by Jake Schreier didn’t surpass $100 million domestically, but it did earn approximately $76 million in the United States and Canada. However, Thunderbolts performed significantly better overseas, earning an additional $86.1 million, bringing the global total to $162.1 million against a reported production cost of $180 million.
In terms of performance, Thunderbolts really shone when it came to the reception of its initial misadventure among both audiences and critics. As per Rotten Tomatoes, Schreier’s film boasts a remarkable 88% rating on the Tomatometer based on 257 reviews. On the other hand, viewers seemed particularly enthusiastic about the arrival of this new superhero team, awarding Thunderbolts an impressive 94% score on the Popcornmeter and the well-deserved grade of “A-” from CinemaScore.
Meanwhile, during the first weekend of the 2025 summer movie season, Thunderbolts wasn’t the only film that drew crowds. The horror-thriller Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, also continued to captivate audiences. In its third weekend, this bloody vampire movie saw a minimal 28% drop in ticket sales, earning another $33 million and securing the No. 2 spot at the box office.
‘Thunderbolts*’ Faces Very Little Competition
To start off the summer movie season, “Thunderbolts*” and the top earner from last week, “Sinners”, took the lead. Meanwhile, “A Minecraft Movie” featuring Jason Momoa and Jack Black held its ground against other titles, securing the third position with $13.7 million. As it nears the $400 million mark domestically ($398.2 million), this video game adaptation is certainly making an impression. The sequel to “The Accountant”, starring Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal, came in fourth with $9.5 million, while the horror film “Until Dawn” ended up fifth with $3.8 million. Several fresh entries may not have matched the success of “Thunderbolts*”, but they still managed to compete for a spot among the top 10 weekend earners at the box office.
In its release, the action thriller “Hit: The Third Case” secured the 9th position, earning approximately $955,000. The film, directed by Sailesh Kolanu, performed exceptionally well in major U.S. and Canadian cities such as New York City, San Francisco, and Toronto. Furthermore, it outperformed “Guru Nanak Jahaz” ($685,000) to maintain the 9th spot. Additionally, Nicolas Cage’s latest film, titled “The Surfer“, came close to breaking into the Top 10 with a relatively low earnings of $674,000, placing it at No. 11.
Next weekend, it’s likely that Thunderbolts will retain its top position at the box office as several uninspiring titles debut on May 9 to kick off the summer movie season of 2025. The horror film, Clown in a Cornfield, aims to enchant audiences with the same mystique surrounding Art the Clown from the Terrifier films. However, Fight or Flight starring Josh Hartnett, the new musical Juliet & Romeo (not to be confused with West Side Story), and the action thriller Shadow Force are unlikely to challenge Thunderbolts when it comes to overthrowing the MCU’s latest cinematic release. By the way, don’t forget that the 78th Cannes Film Festival starts on Tuesday, May 13!
