“Thrilling” but “disturbing” UK drama with Mark Bonnar is now streaming in the UK

As a devoted admirer, I’m excited to share that the captivating psychological thriller, Apple Tree Yard, featuring the talented Mark Bonnar from Shetland, is now streaming on Disney+. This gripping series is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat!

Initially aired in 2017 on BBC One, this four-part drama series was adapted from Louise Doughty’s critically acclaimed novel by the same title. Known for her work on the UK version of “Shameless,” Amanda Coe is responsible for crafting the scripts.

Under the guidance of Emily Watson, who starred in “Chernobyl” (2019), the series “Apple Tree Yard” narrates the story of Yvonne Carmichael, a distinguished scientist. However, her life takes an unexpected turn when she finds herself entangled in a web of lies and deceit after initiating a relationship with the enigmatic Mark Costley, played by Ben Chaplin.

As for Bonnar, the Scottish star portrays Dr Gary Carmichael, Yvonne’s husband.

Right now, the show boasts a Certified Fresh rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. As the Globe and Mail put it, “It’s both exhilarating and unsettling; one of the most unnerving shows you’ll watch this year.

The Daily Mail expressed a similar thought by stating: “No TV drama has ever stirred up as much uncomfortable curiosity or perspiration.

In the meantime, the Radio Times enthusiastically praised it, stating, “What makes this drama compelling is its deep, subtle shadows.

During a conversation with the BBC, Watson discussed Yvonne’s storyline in “Apple Tree Yard”. He observed that her character tells one lie that escalates into more lies, making the situation increasingly complex and extremely distressing.

As a devoted admirer, I fervently anticipate that my words about Yvonne will spark passionate discussions among us all. I truly believe that her actions and decisions will ignite strong emotions within each of us.

It’s likely that some individuals may strongly disapprove of her actions. However, I believe there will be certain women who find themselves intrigued by this relationship, as it portrays an older woman embarking on an exhilarating affair. I anticipate that it will spark conversations. The moral complexity and the lack of clear-cut right or wrong seems realistic to me. I’m aware that a story can be less engaging when it is overly morally straightforward, and I believe this narrative offers a mature perspective where all characters are flawed, intricate, and interesting precisely because of their imperfections.
