There’s always been discussion among musicians about what truly makes a guitar solo special. Is it the skill of the guitarist, the unique sound of the instrument, or a combination of both? Some solos are so iconic that even today, no one can quite replicate the magic of the original artist.

I’m a guitarist who loves complex playing, and there are three solos that consistently amaze me and give listeners chills. It was hard to pick just three – the list could be endless! – but I think it’s a good starting point, and maybe I’ll share more in the future.

Here are my three favorite guitar solos – performances that go beyond just skillful playing and truly convey emotion!

“Watermelon In Easter Hay” (1979), Frank Zappa

Frank Zappa, a true guitar legend, appears on my list again with his incredible song, “Watermelon in Easter Hay.” It’s a masterpiece for many reasons – from its hilariously silly lyrics to Zappa’s non-stop, amazing guitar playing, he truly delivers.

I just love this track because it really builds as it goes on. It’s amazing how the artist uses the same riff throughout the whole song, but keeps it fresh by changing up how he plays it in each verse. It’s a really emotional song, and it feels like he’s sharing a message about the importance of freedom – not just for musicians, but for everyone.

Released in 1979, the album Joe’s Garage tells a story about a government trying to suppress music, and Zappa created it as a response.

It’s wonderful to remember that music was Frank Zappa’s greatest gift, and it inspired some of his most incredible work. He was truly one of the most talented guitarists ever, and it’s a real loss that we won’t experience another artist quite like him.

This guitar solo was truly innovative and unique. It felt incredibly comforting and relaxing, like a warm embrace from the instrument itself.

“Althea” (1980), Grateful Dead

The Grateful Dead were a remarkably positive and influential band, and I consider them the originators of the jam band scene. They showed me how music could bring pure joy. Their unique sound, largely thanks to the late Jerry Garcia, elevated jam bands to a new level, creating a truly special atmosphere.

He was a genuinely kind and generous musician who poured his heart into his songs. He had a gift for captivating audiences and making them feel comfortable with his beautiful guitar playing. Even with the challenges of life as a musician, he always managed to create warm and loving music.

“Althea,” considered one of the band’s most beautiful songs, is a heartfelt expression of love and empathy. Even after 45 years, it powerfully demonstrates the depth of emotion a single piece of music can evoke. Jerry Garcia understood the profound love embedded in the song, and it serves as a reminder of the emotional capacity we all possess through life’s experiences.

This song perfectly captures the feeling of a blissful summer evening – like everything is right with the world, you’re surrounded by love, and you’re incredibly talented. It’s pure joy and skill combined.

We’re grateful to the Grateful Dead for being more than just the first to popularize jam bands – their music was full of love and continues to be cherished and admired by fans today.

“Free Bird” (1972), Lynyrd Skynyrd

And finally, no discussion of guitar solos is complete without mentioning Lynyrd Skynyrd. Their iconic solo in “Free Bird” is simply legendary. It’s a song that evokes powerful memories for me – of family, feeling empowered, and learning to let things go. It truly feels genuine and heartfelt.

This song is truly transformative – the first time you hear it, it’ll stay with you. It’s been a source of strength for me through many tough times, and I’m so thankful for that. It’s a comforting reminder that things will eventually be alright, no matter the challenges life throws your way. It’s a song to live by.
