Three finalist cities announced to host Sundance Film Festival in 2027

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for independent cinema and a deep-rooted appreciation for the Sundance Film Festival, I must admit my excitement is palpable. The festival has been a beacon of creativity and innovation in the film industry, and its potential relocation presents an intriguing opportunity.

Three potential host cities have been named as finalists for the Sundance Film Festival, starting from 2027: Boulder, Colorado; Cincinnati; and a joint bid by Salt Lake City and Park City, Utah. These are the cities under serious consideration at this stage.

Being dropped from consideration are Atlanta; Louisville, Ky.; and Santa Fe, N.M.

Earlier this year, the Sundance Institute hinted at a potential move away from its familiar location in Park City.

As stated in a press announcement, the institute evaluated all three finalists based on their adherence to ethics and equity values, the quality of their infrastructure, and their capacity to organize the festival. Moreover, they were assessed on how they plan to nurture the diverse Sundance community and motivate future independent filmmakers.

In a statement, Sudance’s festival director and head of public programming Eugene Hernandez said, “As we move to the next phase in our search for a sustainable home for the Sundance Film Festival, we see great promise and potential in Boulder, Cincinnati and Salt Lake/Park City. Each has shown us the blend of exciting possibilities, values, and logistics needed to produce a vibrant, inviting and inclusive Festival. We’re excited for a future Sundance that can discover, support and inspire artists and audiences for the next forty years.”

After the 2025 festival in Park City wraps up, they’ll reveal the chosen city to host the event at a later time.
