As a seasoned gamer with years of Star Trek: Voyager marathons under my belt, I can confidently say that Kate Mulgrew’s portrayal of Captain Kathryn Janeway was nothing short of iconic. While it’s fascinating to ponder the “what-ifs” of Hollywood casting, I firmly believe that neither Linda Hamilton nor Lindsay Wagner would have been the ideal fit for this role.

Fans of Star Trek: Voyager are aware that Kate Mulgrew didn’t initially hold the position of captain when the show began production; Geneviève Bujold was originally cast for the part. However, Bujold later chose to withdraw from the role, paving the way for Mulgrew to step in and create history with her performance.

Initially, several actresses, including Susan Gibney who played Dr. Leah Brahms on Star Trek: The Next Generation, were in contention for the role. Gibney was actually a top choice and underwent screen tests. However, it was deemed that she appeared too young for the part. Interestingly, two other actors were also considered, but I believe their casting would have resulted in an incongruous Captain Kathryn Janeway, at least from my perspective.

As a die-hard Star Trek fan, I was intrigued to learn from Whatculture that Linda Hamilton and Lindsay Wagner were strong contenders for the role of Captain Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek: Voyager. However, despite their exceptional talents, neither seemed to perfectly embody the type of Janeway the series required to thrive.

When it became clear that the next captain for a Star Trek series would be a woman, everyone involved understood that it had to be the ideal candidate. The role wasn’t something anyone could fill. The chosen actress had to embody a blend of firmness and fairness, capable of leading without being second-guessed and earning respect without instilling fear among her crew. Moreover, she would have to project authority without appearing overbearing. Essentially, she needed to win over the skepticism of viewers who were unsure about a female captain in Star Trek, demonstrating her suitability to command Voyager.

In a simpler form, here’s how you could rephrase the given text: Hamilton is known for portraying tough characters, but she also showed a gentle side in ‘Beauty and the Beast’. This softness might have been useful for Captain Janeway. However, Hamilton shines most in challenging roles requiring strength and ruthlessness, aspects that weren’t heavily used for Captain Janeway, although her performance in “Year of Hell” hinted at a more formidable side.

Wagner consistently displays a warm demeanor in all her performances, even when portraying anger. The roles she’s taken on seem tailored to showcase her strong points. Despite being someone you’d love to be friends with, it’s hard to imagine her in the role of Captain Voyager.

It seems that the unique way Kate Mulgrew embodied Captain Janeway on Voyager makes me doubt if either Hamilton or Wagner could have played the same role as effectively. In other words, I find it hard to imagine Kate Mulgrew in a different role such as The Bionic Woman, because she truly made Captain Janeway her own. Some actors are great at fulfilling roles, while others transform them into something uniquely theirs – that was Kate Mulgrew.
