Even though his character, Thor, is often called the strongest Avenger, Chris Hemsworth believes there’s a different power ranking within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor, who first appeared as Thor in 2011, recently shared his thoughts on how his character compares to Wanda Maximoff, also known as Scarlet Witch (played by Elizabeth Olsen).
Wanda Maximoff first appeared briefly after the credits of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Age of Ultron. She was originally presented as an orphan with powers gained from the Mind Stone, abilities that included reading minds and moving objects with her thoughts. Over the past ten years of Marvel movies and shows, however, her powers have evolved to more closely resemble those from the comics, where she’s a powerful sorceress who can alter reality.
Thor is incredibly powerful – as an Asgardian god, he has superhuman strength, heals quickly, lives for a very long time, and can control electricity. However, in a recent Instagram clip posted by samihaidary_, Chris Hemsworth (who plays Thor in the Avengers movies) surprisingly admitted that Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, would likely win in a fight between the two. He said with a smile, “Probably Wanda.”
Considering Wanda’s incredibly powerful abilities to alter reality and her mastery of dark magic, Chris Hemsworth’s reaction makes sense. Wanda proved to be a formidable opponent for Doctor Strange in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Fans often compare Wanda to Thor’s brother, Loki, as well. Like Wanda, Loki is a magical trickster with the power to change his appearance and deceive others.
Wanda and Loki have both become much more powerful since they were first introduced, so it’s difficult to predict who would win in a fight between them. While Thor and Loki are confirmed to appear in the upcoming film Doomsday, it’s currently unknown if Elizabeth Olsen will reprise her role as Wanda. However, Olsen has expressed her desire to return, stating she enjoys the character’s development and believes the storyline has been well-written.
Hemsworth is also thrilled to have his character back in the series. He described Avengers: Doomsday as “incredibly emotional and powerful,” and added, “This one is going to blow you away. I don’t even know how they pull it off.”
Even with uncertain futures for both Scarlet Witch and Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a battle between them would be incredibly exciting. Given the huge stakes of the Doomsday storyline and the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars, Marvel has a chance to pit heroes against each other and introduce new characters with cameos, potentially giving fans the showdown they’re hoping for.
