Thor star Jaimie Alexander shares harrowing near-death experience and what a voice from beyond whispered to her

Jaimie Alexander, the actress, has revealed that facing a life-threatening situation helped her finally acknowledge and address her struggles with alcohol.

Natalie Portman, age 41, recently shared in a post on Substack that she didn’t realize she had a drinking problem until after a difficult trip with a new partner led to a case of appendicitis. It was then she recognized her daily alcohol consumption as an addiction.

I remember when Jaimie Alexander first shared the story of what led her to get sober – it happened back in 2018, right when she was filming ‘Blindspot’. That show was huge, running for five seasons from 2015 to 2020, so it was a really busy time for her, and that incident was a turning point.

The actress said she was dating a really nice guy when they decided to take a weekend trip a few hours outside of New York City. He wanted to look at some properties he was considering buying.

Unfortunately, the trip didn’t go as expected. A huge snowstorm hit the state, making it impossible for them to drive back to the city.

Alexander and her boyfriend enjoyed a cozy night in a rented cabin during the snow, accompanied only by his adorable three-legged dog.

What was supposed to be a romantic trip quickly became a nightmare when heavy snowfall trapped the couple indoors and they ran out of supplies.

‘Sure, we had a few bottles of water and some snacks… but do you know what we didn’t have? ALCOHOL,’ Alexander wrote.

Alexander explained she began to worry when she realized there was no alcohol at the rental, and she’d forgotten to bring her own flask.

She admitted she didn’t know how she’d get through the night without drinking, all while trying to appear happy and normal for her new boyfriend.

Her desperation was particularly awkward, as the new man she was seeing was totally sober.

The actress from Kyle XY got through the night, but her boyfriend said she seemed really stressed and overwhelmed.

By the next evening, the weather had improved enough for them to drive back to her Brooklyn apartment. All she could think about was relaxing with a strong drink.

Alexander said she felt dangerously dizzy when she arrived home late that night. She poured herself a large glass of bourbon, but couldn’t make herself drink it.

She described feeling strangely disconnected from the bourbon, as if an invisible force was pulling her away from it.

The following day, Alexander woke up feeling nervous and unwell, and at work, she became easily frustrated and felt physically off-balance.

Her workout that evening came to a halt because of her trainer’s concerns.

Alexander remembered his trainer telling him he looked unwell – unsteady and paler than normal.

Before bed, she again tried to have a glass of whisky, only to stop herself for an unknown reason.

‘It felt like someone was physically pulling the glass out of my hands,’ Alexander wrote.

The next day, it was obvious she wasn’t feeling well. She developed a stomach ache that wouldn’t go away with over-the-counter remedies.

A nurse on set tried to help by massaging her stomach, and they also gave her Tums, but Alexander still wasn’t feeling relieved after several hours.

She wrote that by lunchtime, she could hardly stay on her feet. The pain had spread from the upper part of her stomach down to her lower right side.

Alexander reported that she was very worried and requested a doctor come to the set. The doctor asked if she might have ovarian cysts that could have burst.

When her pain became unbearable, forcing her to curl up on the floor of her trailer, Alexander was rushed to her doctor, and that’s when she began having contractions.

Despite a lifetime of injuries, Alexander said this pain was the worst she had ever felt.

Her increasingly severe symptoms alerted her doctor to the problem, so he told her driver to rush her to the hospital right away instead of waiting for an ambulance.

She remembered him telling her, ‘Your appendix is about to burst. If the doctors don’t take it out immediately, I will personally perform the surgery.’

Hospital tests showed her appendix had burst, and she was developing a serious infection called sepsis. Doctors quickly prepared her for surgery.

Honestly, waiting to be moved to the operating table, I truly felt like my life was slipping away. It was a terrifying moment, and I genuinely thought I was dying.

Suddenly, all the fear disappeared, and a feeling of love took its place.

‘I was free,’ she recalled thinking.

Alexander recalled a strange experience: while contemplating death, she distinctly heard a voice speaking inside her own mind.

Once she chose to stay on Earth, the voice told her she would have to give up alcohol forever.

Alexander described a moment of sudden clarity for her, when she truly understood how deeply affected she was by her alcohol use.

Alexander’s surgery went well, and she was released from the hospital five days later.

What initially seemed like a life-threatening illness actually turned out to be a turning point, helping me realize how I was living and what I needed to change to achieve my goals.

Alexander observed that she relied on her boyfriend to support her recovery, and he encouraged her to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

Since that time seven years earlier, Alexander said she has been able to remain sober.
