Have you ever attended a celebration with lots of foam? These events are often found at nightclubs and involve people, sometimes dressed revealingly, dancing amidst clouds of foam while music plays. Sometimes, the participants may be under the influence of certain substances, but not always.

To be completely honest, I’d choose to heat up my own brain over engaging in a soap fight with others in public any day. Furthermore, considering my age of 58, it would seem and feel rather embarrassing for me to participate in something that essentially caters to the young adult demographic of 18-30.

Contrary to belief, it seems that 61-year-old Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon, was photographed this week on his $500 million yacht Koru, wearing Vilbrequins and engaged in a playful scrub with his soon-to-be wife, Lauren Sanchez, who is also 55.

The festivities, taking place near Croatia as they journeyed towards Venice for their upcoming wedding, supposedly celebrated the 19th birthday of the groom-to-be’s daughter. This added an extra layer of awkwardness to the occasion.

A somewhat embarrassed youth might say: Is it not embarrassing beyond belief when your companions see your own mom behaving playfully in a two-piece swimsuit with the person you’re about to marry? I can assure you, if I had acted that way towards one of my kids, they would have cut ties with me.

However, the extravagant wedding festivities for Bezos are merely the prelude. The actual matrimonial ceremony, spanning a week, is estimated to cost between $15 million and $20 million (£11 million – £15 million), stirring controversy among some Venetians who find objectionable the transformation of their city into an opulent playground for the wealthy.

Venice, not unfamiliar with the darker sides of human actions, was essentially constructed upon foundations of deceit and ambition. However, its past benefactors managed to infuse a touch of creativity into their lavish whims, showcasing an imaginative flair amidst their indulgences.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I don’t merely dwell on the lineage of Doges who ruled this city during its golden era or the grandeur of its annual Carnevale; instead, my thoughts also wander to the mesmerizing Marchesa Casati, the muse of Jean Cocteau and Cecil Beaton, who made her home at the Palazzo Leoni on the Grand Canal in 1910.

The esteemed Countess frequently held extravagant parties, lavishing immense sums on clothing and decorations. Her collection of rare creatures, including cheetahs and snakes worn as accessories, was quite remarkable.

As a former wealthiest Italian woman, I squandered my immense riches, eventually succumbing to poverty in the heart of London. Whispers claim that during my final moments, I could be seen rummaging through trash bins in Kensington, seeking feathers to adorn my hair.

Without a shadow of a doubt, there’s something captivating about Venice that invites extravagance. Maybe it’s because the city itself is somewhat extravagant, constructed on marshy ground and always teetering on the edge of being reclaimed by the sea. However, characters like Casati at least exuded a certain sophistication.

Today’s wealthy elite find Venice similar to Las Vegas – they seem to have little appreciation or respect for its cultural richness, aesthetic charm, and traditional values. Just like Disney might not prioritize historical authenticity, these individuals show a comparable disregard towards Venice’s heritage.

Observe how Kanye West and Bianca Censori conducted themselves during that time. It appeared as if he was showcasing his wife in a rather revealing manner, suggesting a sexually charged display, followed by a suggestive performance on a gondola, all happening in public view.

Sanchez’s attire at President Trump’s inauguration was quite bold and lacked refinement, much like her behavior.

However, these contemporary high-net-worth individuals show little regard for others or anything else. They seem to believe that everything should yield to their desires. Their behavior is akin to pampered children, acting without restraint since no one dares to deny them.

Consequently, Luigi Brugnaro, the mayor of Venice, expressed his great pride in hosting the festivities and mentioned, “I’m not certain if I or he will be able to meet and shake hands, but it’s an honor that they chose Venice.” It is reported that Bezos has made substantial donations to various charities in Venice prior to the wedding.

Over the coming days, it’s said that celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom, and even some members of the Trump family are expected to attend the wedding. Additionally, there are whispers that Lady Gaga and Elton John might perform at the event. This just goes to show the influence of Bezos’s wealth.

Although certain aspects aren’t obtainable through purchase, during this season, the canals won’t just teem with tourists, but they will also carry a lingering scent reminiscent of centuries of human waste, which becomes noticeable as temperatures rise.

For those familiar with the authentic Venice, it’s impossible to cover up or mask its unique scent, regardless of wealth or elaborate decorations.

In the end, it seems that Venice could indeed be the ideal backdrop for the Bezos spectacle.
