Nicolas Cage‘s romantic life has often been in the headlines. He’s been married several times, famously including a quick Vegas wedding, and has even talked about dating Sarah Jessica Parker. Perhaps you’ve heard the story about him throwing a $65,000 engagement ring overboard after an argument with Elvis Presley’s daughter?

According to Priscilla Presley’s 2025 memoir, Softly as I Leave You: Life After Elvis, a fight between Nicolas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley during their relationship was so dramatic it felt like something out of one of Cage’s over-the-top films. Presley details this incident in her new book.

One afternoon, while sailing off the coast of Catalina Island on Nic’s yacht, the Weston, Lisa and Nic had a huge argument. In the heat of the moment, Lisa took off her engagement ring and threw it at Nic, and he angrily tossed it into the ocean.

As someone who devoured celebrity gossip back in the early 2000s, I definitely remember that whole rollercoaster romance and messy breakup. But this particular detail? Totally new to me, and honestly, it’s wild! I just read about a fight that ended with a ring – seriously, a ring worth more than my yearly salary – getting tossed into the ocean, and now I need to know the rest of the story.

According to Presley, Cage deeply regretted losing the equipment and did everything he could to locate it. He even hired a diving team to search the waters off the California coast, but they couldn’t find it. Presley continued by saying:

As far as I know, the ring is still there.

After the $65,000 six-carat ring disappeared, Nicolas Cage quickly replaced it. Just a few days later, he surprised Lisa Marie Presley with not one, but two new rings – the second one boasting an even larger, ten-carat diamond.

So, they did end up marrying, but honestly, it just wasn’t a good fit, and they divorced in 2004. Looking back, Priscilla Presley always seemed to think this whole period really highlighted how difficult things were between her daughter and her ex-husband – it was a pretty tense relationship, to say the least.

Lisa and Nic had a very turbulent relationship, full of dramatic fights and quick reconciliations. They would argue, shout, and sometimes damage things, only to be back together the very next day.
