This One Obi-Wan Scene Had My Whole Theater Bursting with Laughter—You Won’t Believe Why!
Growing up with the prequel Star Wars trilogy, I’ve been familiar with the numerous memes from Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. However, during my initial theater experience, it wasn’t a humorous scene that resonated with me. Instead, watching Revenge of the Sith became a special moment as it was the first Star Wars movie I ever saw in theaters when I was only five years old. The recent re-release this year amplified my excitement. Contrary to my expectations for enthusiastic quoting, some unexpected reactions surprised me.
Before I sat down to watch Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, I noticed some cinemas were applauding during the Order 66 and younglings scenes – just wanted to say, if you did cheer there, it’s not a moment for celebration. Frankly, those sequences are far from joyful; they represent a heavy, tragic turn in the series that has unfortunately been minimized by memes around the prequel films, particularly Revenge of the Sith.
Despite not anticipating it, given other humorous elements in the film like Anakin and Obi-Wan’s banter during the Battle of Coruscant opening sequence, there was a single harmless scene that left my entire theater roaring with laughter – even me. It wasn’t just us; social media suggests that many other theaters shared this reaction to the unexpectedly hilarious random moment.
Obi-Wan Randomly Appearing On Padmé’s Ship Made My Whole Theater Laugh
Why Was He Posted Up Like That?
It can be clearly stated that there was no logical explanation for Obi-Wan’s positioning aboard Padmé Amidala’s ship on Mustafar. Given his knack for dramatic flair, as demonstrated abundantly in the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars series, it comes as no surprise that Obi-Wan decided to reveal his hidden presence without uttering a word. Instead, he simply stood in the open hatch, hands on his hips and legs spread apart.
The unexpected switch to Obi-Wan after the intense conversation between Anakin and Padmé, particularly when Anakin force chokes Padmé moments later, is what makes the scene so amusingly ironic. Obi-Wan’s casual entrance, reminiscent of a smug fashion model, is quite laughable, especially considering he didn’t need to announce himself at all. In fact, his appearance only served to make Padmé appear guilty in Anakin’s eyes.
During the movie at my theater, there were several humorous instances that elicited laughter, but none compared to the scene that sparked the loudest and most hearty chuckles. I can absolutely see why this was the case, as even I found myself laughing out loud at it. Yet, its humor was unexpected, catching us all off guard. It seemed as if we had momentarily forgotten Obi-Wan’s appearance in that scene, and the heavy tension that had settled among the audience dissipated instantly when Obi-Wan served up a dose of Jedi authenticity.
Revenge Of The Sith Can Be Funny, But It Also Should Be Taken More Seriously
It’s An Utterly Heartbreaking Tragedy
In previous discussions, it’s been noted that one of the saddest aspects of “Revenge of the Sith” is how its memes tend to minimize the gravity and consequences of its narrative. It’s puzzling when fans cheer for Order 66, a moment as iconic as it is, because it demonstrates a lack of understanding about that scene, particularly for those who have watched “The Clone Wars.” Order 66 results in the execution of thousands, carried out by clone troopers under mind control without their knowledge or consent.
As a dedicated Star Wars fan, I can’t help but reflect on a scene that’s been a subject of discussion for years – Anakin confronting the younglings. The idea of Anakin killing the younglings has become a long-standing Star Wars joke, with Ewan McGregor, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi, struggling to deliver the line in Revenge of the Sith without chuckling (as evident by him quickly covering his mouth after delivering it). However, when we consider this scene within its context, it’s nothing short of chilling. Anakin, on the brink of fatherhood himself, is responsible for taking the lives of a group of children for the second time in his life. The gravity and horror of this act cannot be overstated.
The memes surrounding “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” are widely popular and cherished, yet they should not overshadow the weighty narrative of the movie. Although some of its dialogue might seem less refined, making it challenging to fully grasp “Revenge of the Sith” as the profound tragedy it is, the story itself deserves more than getting lost in ongoing internet humor. I found it amusing when my theater chuckled during the Obi-Wan scene in “Revenge of the Sith”, but I’m thankful we didn’t laugh during its more somber moments.
