Channel 5’s brand new thriller series The Rumour will premiere tonight (10 September) at 9pm.
The BBC drama series “The Rumour” is led by Rachel Shenton, best known for her role in “All Creatures Great and Small.” This show is an adaptation of Lesley Kara’s 2018 novel of the same name. Richard Clark, known for his work on shows like “Doctor Who” and “Outlander,” takes on the director role. Screenwriter Giula Sandler, who previously wrote “The House Across the Street” for Channel 5, has adapted the scripts for this production.
Brimming with surprises and unexpected developments, the novel “The Rumour” focuses on Joanna (Shenton), a mother relocating to the quaint town of Flinstead along with her son, Alfie.

After learning a rumor that a convicted child murderer may be living nearby, Joanna decides to discuss this with local mothers as a way to connect, unwittingly stirring up fear and mistrust. As her curiosity about the truth deepens, it doesn’t take long for Joanna to find herself caught up in a “perilous cycle of secrets and accusations”.
In addition to Emily Atack from “Rivals,” Joanne Whalley known for “Wolf Hall,” Samuel Anderson hailing from “Amandaland,” Carryl Thomas recognized in “Silo,” Ellie Haddington famed for “Enola Holmes,” Lucy Speed who’s well-known in “Unforgotten,” and Liza Sadovy of “A Real Pain” also make appearances.

Regarding the five-part series, Channel 5’s drama commissioning editor Paul Testar stated (via Variety): “The Rumour” delves into the captivating tale of the perilous influence of secrets and rumors in a small community. With Lesley Kara’s spellbinding narrative and an impressive ensemble cast, this series guarantees heart-pounding suspense and an intriguing examination of the delicate balance between trust and apprehension.
Similarly, Shenton praises The Rumor, referring to it as “a tale of a woman’s unraveling as she persistently chases after the truth.

The actor commented, “She’s extremely relatable and the actresses are outstanding.” He also mentioned, “It’s a pleasure to collaborate with such a large number of talented women.
Sharing more details about the show, Emily Atack commented that it is entertaining and fast-paced, featuring some fantastic plot twists. She believes that the audience will truly enjoy it.
The Rumour will premiere on Channel 5 tonight (Wednesday 10 September) at 9pm.
