This Morning’s ‘longest serving editor’ quits show after 10 years
As a long-time viewer of “This Morning,” I must say that Martin Frizell’s departure feels like the sun setting on an era. With over a decade of dedication, he has been the backbone of the show, guiding it through countless topics and transforming it into a household name.
This Morning editor Martin Frizell is quitting the ITV show after a decade.
It has been announced that the program’s longest-running editor is set to leave the show by next year. He initially came on board with ITV in 2014, serving as the editor for Loose Women first.
According to Frizell’s statement (reported by The Sun), next year he anticipates that his family responsibilities will shift, requiring him to make more time available for them.
I deeply cherish my team at ITV, and I’ll really miss them, as well as the excitement of live television. However, working in this role is a constant, round-the-clock duty, available 24/7, and it’s impossible for me to balance both commitments.
I’ve been honored to guide exceptional broadcasters and content creators. Together, we’ve produced over 6,000 hours of live, relevant television programming, equivalent to approximately 20,000 different segments. Although awards are always appreciated, I take the most pride in the positive impact we’ve had on people’s lives, including initiatives that prevented numerous suicides, addressed menopause, testicular cancer, and offered practical advice through our ‘how-to’ pieces.
Frizell, who’s wedded to Fiona Phillips, commented: “This behemoth presents the most challenging ordeal for any broadcaster.
In a heartfelt acknowledgement, ITV’s chief executive, Kevin Lygo, praised Frizell by stating that “creating over ten hours of fresh, relevant, and live TV each week is nothing short of extraordinary.
Lygo stated: “Martin has successfully ensured that the program and its brand remain well-known and a popular, award-winning fixture on our schedule, while also expanding its success in digital and social platforms.
“On behalf of the ITV network, we thank Martin and wish him the very best for his future ventures.”
Frizell’s departure follows a period of approximately one and a half years marked by changes at This Morning. Notably, this period saw the departures: first, that of Phillip Schofield, who confessed to an affair with a junior coworker he characterized as “unwise but not illegal”; and second, Holly Willoughby’s departure later in 2023.
Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley replaced the pair as main presenters earlier this year.
The program faced allegations concerning its workplace environment, but a recent examination concluded that it didn’t exhibit a “toxic” atmosphere last year. However, it was revealed that ITV exerted substantial effort without success in investigating the Schofield incident in 2019.
This Morning airs Mondays through Fridays on ITV1 and ITVX.
