As a seasoned journalist with decades of experience under my belt, I must say, the ongoing saga at Good Morning Britain is indeed intriguing. Having covered numerous political scandals and power struggles during my career, I can’t help but see shades of Westminster politics in this latest drama.
Workers from the ITV morning news program, Good Morning Britain, have observed that their supervisors are holding more frequent meetings than typical at their studios in West London. Additionally, these managers seem to be displaying higher levels of stress over the past few weeks.
The reason behind it could be attributed to Presenter Ed Balls, who enjoys a special fondness from the leaders, particularly the head of the show, Susanna Reid.
However, the ex-Labour MP who transitioned into television fame, often referred to as “Red Ed” due to his progressive political beliefs, has been giving ITV quite a challenge lately.
He hasn’t appeared on the GMB couch, a spot he’s held as a rotating guest presenter since 2021, due to him and his wife, Yvette Cooper who serves as Home Secretary, being involved in the ongoing ‘Taylorgate’ scandal that’s affecting Keir Starmer’s government.
Last week, it was revealed that Ms. Cooper participated in talks with Scotland Yard, which ultimately resulted in police officers providing Ms. Swift a police escort using emergency lights for her journeys to and from her Wembley concerts in August.

Later on, it became known that the Home Secretary had been invited to one of the singer’s performances. The invitation was extended by her husband, who had received four complimentary tickets from Taylor Swift’s record company, Universal.
While his absence might stem from scheduling or it not being his scheduled turn, with Trisha Goddard and Richard Madeley also on rotation, there’s a lot of talk about whether he ought to appear on the TV news program in the first place.
For several decades, the couple, Balls and Cooper, married since 1998 and parents of three, have formed a political duo, working side by side in politics.
Ever since allegations related to the recent scandal surfaced, Balls has been absent from the studio, leaving management in a flurry to come up with an appropriate resolution.
The close association between Balls and Labour Party – having joined at 16, serving as Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families under Tony Blair, and later as Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer – raises questions about impartiality, and as a news program, Good Morning Britain (GMB) should strive to avoid any bias.
As a devoted admirer, I can attest that Reid, who kick-started this show over a decade past, holds me in high regard. However, the upper tiers at ITV have made it clear that they’re seeking a ‘drama-free’ environment following the controversy involving Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on their sister program, This Morning.
A GMB insider tells me: ‘There are serious disagreements now over what to do for the best. The whole thing is a headache, he is rated highly as a broadcaster, but it is causing real problems now.
ITV is working tirelessly to resolve an issue. While Ed is highly respected among his colleagues, he’s been causing increasing concern due to allegations of partiality that are negatively impacting the program.
Discontent arose as early as August, when during an interview, Balls discussed with his spouse the surge of violent disturbances that occurred in the UK following the Southport murders on his show.
On July 29, tragically, three young girls lost their lives, while ten others were critically hurt during a dance class that Taylor Swift was associated with. This event sparked a wave of incorrect information spread online, wrongly identifying the perpetrator as an undocumented immigrant.
Appearing on the show sparked a flurry of disagreements across various social media platforms regarding Home Secretary Yvette Cooper.

During the interview, it was widely perceived that Cooper received lenient treatment, as Balls strongly backed both Cooper and the administration.
One furious critic wrote to the show: ‘How could you let Ed Balls interview his own wife, Yvette Cooper?! That’s not journalism, that’s a cosy little chat between spouses. Biased doesn’t even begin to cover it.’
Reports from sources on Good Morning Britain (which recently marked its tenth anniversary) suggest that the interview triggered a ‘crisis’ within the show due to an influx of viewers complaining to Ofcom about perceived political bias in their coverage. The television watchdog logged approximately 16,000 complaints concerning the program.
One confidant remarked that things got quite chaotic, with all the higher-ups departing in unison. It’s worth noting that ITV is exceptionally sensitive regarding comments about their shows on social media. They view such feedback as a measure of audience opinion, taking it personally and seriously.
‘The bosses were fuming. There were some very angry people.’
As the residue of previous events started to wane, headlines shifted towards allegations of Labour’s gratuitous offerings and cronyism implicating donor Lord Alli. Long-standing broadcaster Richard Madeley swiftly took the lead.

Some speculate if it was a strategic decision, while other reports on the program argue that it follows a scheduling system (a rota), and they maintain it was just Madeley’s scheduled time to host.
There seems to be a divide within the backstage team at GMB, with some referring to it as one of the most significant issues since the departure of Piers Morgan following his remarks concerning Meghan Markle in 2021.
Some hold a great fondness for Benedict Cumberbatch, whose fame escalated following his resignation as an MP and participating in Strictly Come Dancing in 2016. However, others express strong disapproval that the program finds itself under scrutiny for allegations of political favoritism.
Additionally, he has several stalwart partners on the program: Susanna Reid, the principal host, is rumored to relish each moment while working alongside him. (or) Susanna Reid, the lead presenter and fellow Strictly contestant, reportedly delights in every second of co-hosting with him.
One colleague remarked, “She finds him incredibly delightful.” In her opinion, he’s highly regarded by the audience and excels as an insightful interviewer. She feels entirely at ease being near him, believing they share a strong connection.
Since Morgan left three years back, it seems she has taken over as the main star of the show, and her thoughts are said to carry significant weight.
According to a source, there is widespread disagreement at ITV regarding his involvement, as they question how impartiality can be maintained when he is the host, given the political context involving Yvette, other Labour MPs, and an anti-Conservative stance. The source finds it remarkable that Ed was chosen for this role.
It was later revealed that the total number of complaints to Ofcom had hit 16,812, yet the organisation said it would not be investigating.
ITV’s CEO, Dame Carolyn McCall did, however, confirm Balls won’t be interviewing his wife again.
At the Royal Television Society gathering, McCall mentioned: “That particular morning was extremely challenging; we were on the brink of declaring a nationwide emergency, and suddenly, we received minimal notice that the Home Secretary would be joining our program.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I must share an interesting turn of events: I found myself participating in a series of candid conversations, a whirlwind of dialogues that caught me off guard yet left me feeling reassured. The reason for this confidence? I firmly believe the encounters were conducted with unbiased fairness and integrity – a testament to the importance of impartiality in our discourses.
Intriguingly, it seems that although Ofcom has made a decision, few have noticed that they are choosing not to act on certain complaints, as they deem it appropriate, maintaining an unbiased stance.
“Should we repeat the experience? I don’t think so. Was it objective, unbiased, and well-balanced? Absolutely. Did they act in a professional manner? Definitely.
Ever since Balls, once a Labour MP representing Morley and Outwood in West Yorkshire, found himself on the esteemed news program I follow so fervently, I’ve been left wondering: How on earth did he secure such a prominent position on a platform where neutrality is key?
The response harks back to 2021, a time when Morgan abruptly left the show following a five-year tenure. His decision was prompted by his unwillingness to issue an apology for doubting Meghan Markle’s assertions that being in the Royal Family impacted her psychological wellbeing.
After that point, they haven’t been able to locate a fitting male substitute, so they brought Balls in for a trial period instead.
Back then, I couldn’t resist grabbing every opportunity I could to be part of the action! When Ben Shephard was called away to co-host This Morning with Cat Deeley in March, I jumped at the chance to take on more shifts. The thrill of being associated with such a successful show was too enticing to pass up!
‘It has been absolutely impossible to find the right replacement for Piers,’ said one show insider.
It seems as though one would expect there to be interest in the position, but surprisingly, this isn’t so. Despite Ed showing competence, his major downside is that he’s transformed into a popular figure on ITV, who happens to be a politician’s spouse.
‘And the worry is that it will all end in tears.’
