Reflecting upon Chrissy Metz’s captivating journey, I am struck by her resilience and determination to rise above adversity. From her remarkable acting career that culminated in a Golden Globe win and multiple SAG Awards, to the publication of her heartfelt memoir, Metz has undeniably made an indelible mark on Hollywood.

Chrissy Metz shared that her stepfather, Crayton Hodge, used to warn her about shutting the cabinets whenever she spoke out about enduring distressing instances of child abuse.

In a conversation with People magazine, the actress from This Is Us, aged 44, who had previously shared her childhood experiences in her 2018 memoir titled “This Is Me: Loving The Person You Are Today,” also discussed how her weight had influenced the way she was treated throughout her life.

On Tuesday’s episode of the Jamie Kern Lima podcast, Metz shared that her stepfather threatened to lock the cupboards, to which she replied, “I don’t believe you understand the situation.

It seems that today there’s increased understanding about various aspects of food, including its production and consumption habits. Through education, we aim to alleviate any associated fears, though I can’t confirm if that was his case personally.

Afterward, Chrissy admitted, ‘Indeed, it involved mental, physical, and emotional mistreatment without a doubt.’

The actress elaborated on how Hodge’s behavior affected her, stating, ‘The emotional aspects…they’re like tiny scratches, minor wounds, and over time, they can lead to a fatal loss of strength. It hurts.’

‘Why does my weight equate my worthiness? And as a 12-year-old kid, it’s like, how do you reconcile that in your mind?’

As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it as: Growing up, I too faced challenges with my weight, and I remember expressing this to someone by saying, “You stand out uniquely among your friends, and it seems none of the trendy clothes from stores like Wet Seal fit you as they do them. You’d often ask to borrow their jewelry instead.

Additionally, not only did all the boys seem to appreciate my friends, but it often felt as though I was introducing my friends to attractive young men.

Chrissy mentioned that she is taking her time to gradually mend those hurts and it’s a challenging process for her… The underlying issue is that she feels undeserving.

Weight continues to carry a significant social bias, and there are numerous factors contributing to it. It seems people often assume things like, “You must be unable to resist food” or “You’re not putting in enough effort,” which I believe are misconceptions.

In simpler terms, ‘The American Horror Story actor commented that attractive models are often placed on a pedestal, despite being unhealthy themselves, since they neglect their physical well-being. Conversely, if someone is overweight, it’s an entirely different situation, finding it hard to comprehend.’

Earlier this year, Metz, a contestant from The Masked Singer, reminisced about past experiences on airplanes where passengers would either let out a sigh, avoid eye contact, or choose not to interact with him.

Before the performance, I might find myself in a predicament where, due to my size, someone might prefer not to sit beside me on an airplane, fearing discomfort or expressing sentiments like, “Oh dear, there’s a larger individual I have to sit next to.

However, after landing a role in This Is Us, Chrissy said the way people treated her changed.

‘But because now I’m on a TV show, they don’t care. Or they’re like, “Oh, well, you’re famous.”‘

In simpler terms, Metz said, “I often felt people might find it bothersome to have me sit next to them, or they might ignore me completely and not interact with me.

Once I gained some recognition, people seemed more inclined to engage in conversations with me or share a seat nearby.

The actress expressed to Lima, “We’re still puzzling over it among ourselves, wondering what it truly signifies. How can I offer them something new or shed some light on the subject? I’m at a loss.

She expressed her confusion, saying, “Is it that they feel less warm when seated near a well-known individual? I can’t say for certain. Frankly, such actions…they tend to undermine one’s trust in others.

Between 2016 and 2022, Mandy Moore significantly played the character of Kate Pearson on the popular NBC show, “This Is Us.

Her acting performance garnered multiple Golden Globe nominations in the category of Best Supporting Actress for a TV series, miniseries, or motion picture made for television.

She also won two SAG Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

Amidst the airing of the series, Chrissy released her 2018 memoir titled “This Is Me: Embracing Yourself Today.

Metz, born to parents Denise and Mark, hails from Homestead, Florida. When she was just six months old, her family – which included her elder siblings Monica and Phillip – relocated to Japan due to a Navy posting, marking the beginning of their journey.

In her memoir, she mentioned that she had never developed a close relationship with Mark, as she did not address him as ‘father’, and she hesitated to adopt his surname during her rise in Hollywood.

Chrissy stated that the last time he paid her a compliment was when she was seven, on a fishing trip together.

In just a few short months, the bond between Mark and Metz’s mother started to deteriorate, and it was discovered that the sailor had secretly purchased a necklace for another woman.

She penned, “I don’t know Mark at all, and I wasn’t sure how to somehow close the distance between us in a magical way.

Mark contested this account, explaining to DailyMail.com, “I didn’t leave her behind? Absolutely not! I didn’t desert anyone. If she chooses not to reach out, that’s her prerogative.

Over time, Chrissy’s mom got acquainted with Crayton Hodge, who eventually took on the role of their stepfather. This man is now referred to as ‘Trigger’ by Metz.

The actress asserted that for numerous years, she endured abuse at the hands of Hodge and was required to undergo regular weigh-ins while residing with him.

In an interview with DailyMail.com last year, Hodge expressed that he had never pressured Metz to change their diet or exercise routine.

In her memoir, Metz expresses disagreement by stating: “I had no idea how to respond to that [assertion]. It’s confusing because he claims he gave me permission to eat anything I wanted, but then he kept weighing me? Incredible. Alright.

The actress additionally penned down an account of a physical altercation she had with her sister in their front yard on Christmas Eve, which took place under the watchful eyes of their neighbors. She also shared memories of aimlessly wandering around grocery stores at the age of eight, preferring to avoid being alone at home.

Moreover, Chrissy spoke candidly about her initial union with Martyn Eaden, who she wed in 2008.

2015 marked the end of their marriage when he initiated a divorce the previous year, mentioning ‘irreconcilable differences’ as the reason.

Last October, Metz ended her three-year relationship with Bradley Collins.

Initially, she chose to share the news via an Instagram post, expressing that even though we’ve parted ways, our affection for one another remains strong.
