Matt Groening, the brain behind The Simpsons, has disclosed the genuine cause for not producing a follow-up to The Simpsons Movie.
2007’s film might get a sequel, as suggested by Groening, who mentioned that the team frequently discusses the idea and continues to have ongoing conversations about it.
Although he mentioned it, Groening doesn’t have concrete plans for a sequel yet because of the extensive effort put into the initial project (as reported by Screen Daily).
At the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Groening shared that the initial film proved challenging for them. Unlike having a backup team, we worked on both the movie and the series concurrently.
We mounted a countdown timer on the wall, which we affectionately referred to as our “Simpsons Countdown Clock”. It ticked off the remaining months, weeks, days, and even seconds until we needed to wrap up the movie. The constant reminder of the approaching deadline often left us feeling overwhelmed.

Although a follow-up seems rather distant for now, Groening hinted, “Ideally, we’d make another film. We’ll have to wait and see.
In the meantime, David Silverman, director of the 2007 film, stated that the team is unwilling to pause the series production for creating another full-length film.
Silverman stated, “We prefer not to pause production [on the series], instead we’re striving to develop a plot worthy of becoming a film.

Matt Selman, a writer and showrunner for The Simpsons, commented: “Our top episodes are designed much like small films, using a three-act structure. So when you watch them on the big screen, it’s natural to wonder, what makes them deserving of such a grand display?
In a nutshell, Selman said, “Should we make a film, here’s what I guarantee – it will be the briefest movie that can lawfully be screened in cinemas and still command top dollar.
The Simpsons airs Sunday nights on FOX in the US. The show currently streams on Disney+ in the UK.
