As a woman who has spent her life advocating for victims of abuse and standing by their stories, it breaks my heart to see cases like this one unfold. The MeToo movement was founded on the belief that women’s voices matter and that we should be believed when we speak out about our experiences. But what happened with Amanda Abbington and Giovanni Pernice on Strictly feels like a step backwards.

It’s crucial for everyone to take seriously any reports of abuse against women, regardless of the form it takes – sexual, violent, or coercive. Believing and supporting victims is essential for their healing and justice.

It often takes victims a significant amount of time, ranging from months to years, to muster the courage to speak up about their experiences. Frequently, they are waging a two-front war – not just against their abusers but also against their own feelings. These emotions may include guilt and bewilderment that arise from the gradual, persistent undermining of their self-confidence.

Individuals may find themselves ensnared by feelings of guilt and apprehension, frequently doubting their own judgment and questioning their mental state, despite irrefutable proof pointing towards someone else’s wrongdoing. Lacking sufficient support, they might unknowingly return to the clutches of their tormentors, often with heartrending results.

Through the MeToo movement, significant change was initiated. It shifted the conversation surrounding abuse, be it sexual or otherwise, providing victims with a platform to express their experiences. By doing so, it increased the likelihood that women’s accounts (regrettably, it is predominantly women who experience such incidents) would initially be given due consideration.

It debunked the notion of the ‘hysterical’ female who ‘couldn’t take a joke’ (so often the refrain of the male predator) and, instead of belittling or blaming victims, took them seriously.

In my opinion, it’s important to acknowledge that misusing the privilege often results in repercussions, and such actions can potentially undermine the truthfulness of reports from genuine victims.

While perusing Katie Hind’s exclusive interview featuring Strictly dancer Giovanni Pernice, where he elucidates the complex predicament with Amanda Abbington, I found myself reflecting that, in a manner of speaking, his dance partner might have put him in a similar position.

During the BBC’s investigation of this unfortunate incident, as well as subsequent disclosures, it appears that most accusations leveled against Pernice may have been misinterpretations or misunderstandings at their core.

In taking her argument against him to its extreme limits, she not only might have cast doubt on her own trustworthiness as a woman and a dependable witness, but also jeopardized the truthfulness of countless other women’s experiences who could be victims of actual abuse, either currently or in the future.

This situation also showcases the perplexing intricacies often found in such cases. Particularly noteworthy is Abbington’s interaction with Pernice, which appeared to convey conflicting signals. He noted that while Pernice appeared content and laid-back around him, her expressions to other contestants were starkly contrasting – significantly more negative.

In response, he queried, “What’s the subject here?” She continued expressing gratitude, such as “You’ve been so patient today, and you’re a fantastic teacher.” However, Amanda had previously mentioned that she had been going through a tough week.

Was Abbington actually facing difficulties, or was she perhaps manipulating the situation to his disadvantage? Or could it be that she herself was unsure about her true feelings towards their professional interaction?

Was she speaking differently around him due to fear and an attempt to appease him (a behavior frequently observed in abusive situations, which may weaken the credibility of her statement), or was she manipulating the situation?

Despite the comprehensive investigation following a £250,000 review by the BBC, it remains challenging to discern clear-cut actions. Women, under such circumstances, may not always act logically, particularly when faced with the pressure, as is often present in shows like Strictly Come Dancing, to ‘fit in’ or ‘get along’.

As Pernice shared, Abbington was the one who initiated the suggestive conversations. “She would say some inappropriate things, including a particular offensive term,” he explained. “However, it was revealed later on that the production team had noticed us using this word among ourselves and asked if it was acceptable.

She responded, “Indeed, it’s all good, I use that name for him! Rest assured, I initiated it.” To which I replied, “Absolutely, everything is okay between us. We’re just having a bit of fun and banter.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but notice how transparent men generally are – they often accept things exactly as they seem. Yet, it’s intriguing that despite Abbington’s soothing words, Pernice felt compelled to document their conversations as a safety measure for himself.

He discloses that he felt compelled to do something, therefore he requested monitors and cameras be set up in the area, also recording himself on his phone for personal safety. He explains that while he enjoyed dancing, the primary purpose was to have a record of the event and ensure his comfort and security within the room, since he didn’t feel entirely at ease.

At that moment, I hadn’t anticipated her leveling any accusations against me – but it seemed as though she was presenting a different account to me in person compared to what she shared within our WhatsApp group. Essentially, she appeared to be spinning two distinct narratives about the situation.

It’s possible that Abbington underestimated her vulnerability before participating in Strictly. She might have felt confident enough to face the challenge, but when it really mattered, she seemed to lack the necessary resilience.

Observing her during the interview, it seems as though there might be deeper factors involved. Maybe she was going through a tough time, and unfortunately, Pernice found himself caught up in the situation.

No matter if they’re true or not, accusations are a weighty matter. Beyond the emotional turmoil they cause, they have the power to shatter an individual’s life and profession, as Pernice can attest. Living in a world where one is considered guilty until proven innocent, and even after proving innocence, forgiveness may not be readily given.

It’s appropriate that the BBC undertook their probe, and they should act appropriately again by reinstating Pernice. Ideally, though, this entire situation could have been avoided from the start.

Many women around the globe suffer at the hands of their oppressors, leading miserable lives. However, unless compelling new information arises that we’re currently unaware of, it seems unlikely that Amanda Abbington falls into this category.
