Hi, I’m Grant Hermanns, an editor and critic for ScreenRant, covering movie and TV news, interviews, and events. I’ve been a journalist for over ten years, but my passion for film – especially disaster movies – started long before that. Like horror, disaster films aren’t always appreciated, but one stands out as a classic: Michael Bay’s Armageddon, which I truly believe is the best disaster movie ever made.
Following his successes with Bad Boys and The Rock, director Michael Bay tackled a massive, big-budget epic in 1998. The film boasted an incredibly famous cast and cost a whopping $140 million to make. The investment proved worthwhile, as audiences loved the combination of thrilling action sequences and heartfelt moments, making it the year’s biggest box office hit with $553 million in earnings.
Armageddon Knows Exactly What It Is, And Over-Delivers

Disaster movies haven’t typically been praised by critics, and for good reason. Often, they prioritize impressive visuals and action over strong characters or meaningful stories. Other times, filmmakers focus so much on character development that the actual disaster feels unimportant. What sets Armageddon apart from most films in this genre is its ability to strike a good balance between exciting spectacle and relatable human drama.
Look, Michael Bay doesn’t totally abandon the emotional core of this disaster flick. The idea of a Texas-sized meteor threatening to wipe out humanity should be inherently dramatic, and he touches on that. The film starts strong, showing the initial devastation around the world, and as we follow these unlikely heroes trying to save us all, there are genuinely moving scenes. It’s not just explosions, though they are plentiful – there’s some real heart here.
Even though the movie explores serious moments, director Michael Bay always makes sure there’s still plenty of entertainment, even as the world faces potential destruction. He balances the drama with relatable characters – from Harry’s (Bruce Willis) team of quirky oil drillers to their unexpected mission with NASA to stop a meteor – and a touch of humor during their chaotic space training. This approach makes the film feel surprisingly realistic for a disaster movie.

What I really love about Armageddon compared to a lot of other disaster movies is just how completely extra it is! You always know you’re going to get something visually stunning with a Michael Bay film, and it totally works here. The way Bay and cinematographer John Schwartzman (they’d worked together on The Rock before) shot everything made even the smallest scenes feel huge – seriously, even a simple medical check-up felt epic!
While I generally enjoy Armageddon, I do think Michael Bay could have benefited from a bit more editing discipline. The film had three editors, all of whom he works with often, and some scenes feel overly fast and jumpy. However, this quick cutting also creates a sense of excitement and matches the chaotic, fast-paced adventure of the team traveling from the ocean floor to outer space.
The film’s over-the-top style is best seen in the central romance between Grace (Liv Tyler) and A.J. (Ben Affleck), even though Grace’s father, Harry, strongly objects. Focusing on these three characters makes the miners’ desperate attempt to save the world even more impactful. Harry is a controlling father who has likely disapproved of all of Grace’s past relationships. A.J.’s fiery personality probably reminds Harry of his younger self. Grace, however, sees qualities in A.J. that her father overlooks.
The strong acting by Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, and Tyler Perry makes the typical family dynamic feel surprisingly powerful within the disaster movie setting. While other films in this genre, like Greenland with its family seeking shelter, or Twister’s divorcing storm chasers, give us characters to care about, none have felt as captivating or emotionally resonant as Grace, Harry, and A.J.

A key part of any good disaster movie is how realistically it portrays the science behind the catastrophe. However, Armageddon doesn’t bother with accuracy when it comes to what would actually happen if a comet threatened Earth. Actor Ben Affleck revealed in the movie’s commentary that director Michael Bay told him to stop questioning why it made more sense to train oil drillers to be astronauts, rather than the other way around – highlighting the film’s disregard for scientific plausibility.
Honestly, I didn’t need a science lecture – I just wanted a fun disaster movie! This film smartly skips the fake science and just tells you how the heroes plan to fix things, not to convince you it could happen, but to keep the story moving. It’s way more exciting than that other movie from the same year, Deep Impact. That one tried so hard to be scientifically accurate and focus on the characters, but it just didn’t have the same thrilling, over-the-top action. This one knows what we’re here for: a spectacular disaster!
Beyond just being a hugely enjoyable film, Armageddon is considered the best disaster movie ever, in part because it gave us the unforgettable Aerosmith power ballad, “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” The song’s lasting popularity and how well it fit the emotional core of A.J. and Grace’s love story are just some of the reasons why the movie remains so beloved and important.
