Disgraced BBC presenter Huw Edwards is furious about a new Channel 5 drama depicting his downfall.
The unexpected statement follows reports that the former newsreader is planning a return to work. He has also issued a sincere apology to the Daily Mail for his 2024 conviction related to possessing illegal images of children.
Huw Edwards, age 64, has strongly criticized the production company, Wonderhood, for the upcoming two-part drama, ‘Power: The Downfall Of Huw Edwards,’ which features Martin Clunes and will air tomorrow at 9pm.
In a statement given only to the Daily Mail, he said the producers didn’t bother to verify any of their claims with him before moving forward with the project.
After the situation unfolded, they finally requested a statement, but stated they could change it as needed. They also wouldn’t say if anyone who made accusations had been compensated for sharing their stories.
‘Channel 5’s “factual drama” is hardly likely to convey the reality of what happened.’
The series depicts how Edwards developed an inappropriate relationship with a young man online. It’s likely to be difficult for the former BBC News at Ten presenter to watch, especially considering he was still anchoring the program just three years ago – a role he held for many years and through which he reported major national events, like the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
Now, though, it seems possible we will be seeing Edwards again.
According to a source, Huw has recently hired an agent, suggesting he’ll be taking on new projects and appearing more publicly in the near future.
He expressed deep regret and remorse for his actions. After pleading guilty to three counts of creating indecent images of children, he was given a six-month sentence that will not be served immediately, but could be enforced over the next two years.
I was deeply moved when I heard him express his genuine regret and remorse in court. He immediately took full responsibility for his awful actions, and I believe him when he says he’s horrified by the very idea of anyone enjoying child exploitation. He made it clear that, to him, each image represents a real, innocent child who has been harmed, and he offered a truly heartfelt apology for everything he did. It felt like a sincere attempt to acknowledge the pain he caused.
Edwards shared with the Daily Mail that he intends to share his perspective on what happened. He explained that creating a full account is taking time because his health isn’t good.
For the past 25 years, I’ve openly discussed my challenges with mental illness. However, many people don’t realize just how serious it was. I was managing it well for a long time, but things eventually went downhill, leading to a tragic result.
‘Mental illness is misunderstood by many but can never be an excuse for criminality.
It can offer some understanding of why people sometimes act terribly, and why my own situation deteriorated as it did.
Edwards said he was sorry for the things he did that led to his conviction, but he stopped short of apologizing for how he behaved with the teenager.
One source strongly disapproved of the statement, describing it as coming across as both delusional and self-pitying, while acknowledging the speaker’s desire to be heard.
A source at the BBC revealed that Huw Edwards used his mental health as a shield for a while. Despite receiving excellent care, he continues to discuss these issues.
The new drama tells the story of how a 17-year-old was manipulated and abused by Huw Edwards, a prominent figure in television.
Oh my gosh, it’s just… heartbreaking to watch Martin Clunes become Edwards. The show brilliantly shows how his secret life just completely unravels, and you’re with him every step of the way as things get worse and worse. It all builds to this incredible, devastating moment – he has to announce he’s leaving everything behind, and it’s because he’s been found guilty of truly awful crimes. It’s so powerfully acted, it’s just… wow. I can’t stop thinking about it.
Although he hasn’t watched the show, Edwards told the Daily Mail that he believes this approach is unfair, irresponsible, and likely violates broadcasting standards set by Ofcom.
It’s strange that Edwards, after moving from London to his mother’s peaceful village in Wales, has decided to act now. This is especially true because the resulting attention will likely revisit the terrible ordeal his former wife, Vicky Flind, and their five children went through.
After he was accused of a crime, she decided to end their marriage of 30 years. Those close to the family say the situation has been incredibly painful.
According to a Channel 5 representative, the documentary ‘Power: The Downfall Of Huw Edwards’ is based on in-depth interviews with the person who made the allegations, their family, the journalists who reported the story, and text messages between them and Huw Edwards. It also incorporates details from court reports. The program was made following the rules set by Ofcom, and all claims presented in the documentary were shared with Huw Edwards’ legal team six weeks prior to its release.
