A Nordic crime drama has found a new streaming home in the UK.
In recent times, the British television premiere of Detective Maria Kallio, adapted from the works of Finnish author Leena Lehtolainen, can be found on Acorn TV. However, it’s also accessible on Prime Video, presented in its original Finnish language with English subtitles.
Our main character is found pursuing a law degree as the title suggests, yet she yearns for her old position where she delved into solving murder cases.
Her desire is fulfilled as she becomes part of a team based in the outskirts of Helsinki, yet despite being an excellent detective with keen instincts for uncovering evidence, she struggles somewhat with managing her personal affairs.
Maria is struggling to make a decision between her attractive colleague and a current relationship, all while trying to find a balance between her desire for starting a family and working in a potentially hazardous occupation.
The book series originally started in the 1990s, however, it wasn’t turned into a TV show until the early 2020s. The third season just debuted this year in Finland, but as of now, Prime Video UK hasn’t released those new episodes. Nevertheless, there are still 20 intriguing episodes to explore.
So far, the show hasn’t gained much attention or received a large number of reviews. On IMDb, it currently holds an average rating of 6.4, based on just 10 user evaluations.
One spectator commended it as a “satisfactory series,” appreciating its traditional approach of presenting an intriguing case in each episode instead of a single murder spanning an entire season. A particularly enthusiastic viewer admired the “puzzling and multifaceted” protagonist.
