Steam is a PC gamer’s dream, offering over 100,000 games as of early 2024—and likely many more now! From relaxing indie games to huge blockbuster titles, you’re sure to find something enjoyable to play.
The platform boasts a large number of free games, including popular titles like Counter-Strike 2, Warframe, and PUBG: Battlegrounds, which attract millions of players daily. However, it’s perhaps most famous for another game that, despite being less talked about recently, can still easily consume countless hours of your time.
This Free Steam Game May Take Over Your Life
If you were gaming in late 2013, you probably encountered Dota 2, the popular multiplayer online battle arena game made by Valve. While League of Legends is more well-known now, these two games were major competitors for years, and Dota 2 actually had the upper hand for a while in the beginning.
If you’re familiar with traditional MOBA games, you’ll quickly understand this one. Like many others, it evolved from the hugely popular Defense of the Ancients mod for Warcraft III, and can be considered a spiritual successor. In fact, Valve brought on the original creator of that mod to develop Dota 2 using the Source Engine.
This game tends to either really grab players or completely overwhelm them. It’s a fast-paced, competitive experience, but it requires learning a lot of technical details, which can be a hurdle for some. If players get past that initial learning curve, they’ll find an addictive and exciting game.
1,800 Hours For DOTA 2 Is Probably A Conservative Guess
So, I’ve been looking into how long it really takes to master this game, and HowLongToBeat says around 1800 hours! Honestly, with all the updates they keep releasing, that number probably just keeps going up the more you get into it. If you’re totally new to this type of game, it can be pretty tough to pick up at first, but once you get past that learning curve, it’s seriously addictive and amazing.
Dota 2 is a significant game with a rich history, and it’s worth trying at least once to see if you enjoy it.
