It seems that everyone enjoys the role of a creator, and we’re all rather poor at it. You might not have suspected that eliminating ladders from our Sims’ pools was such a shared experience until it turned into a widely recognized meme. Furthermore, it’s no surprise that many game mods focus on incorporating, well, adult content. Given this, when I began experimenting with DeepGame, the text adventure by Utile Labs powered by ChatGPT, I made sure to unleash my most mischievous side.

The ChatGPT-powered game, accessible to anyone with an account, produces stories across multiple genres. You initiate play by typing commands such as “Start a romantic fantasy tale” or “Catch me off guard,” and then watch as the system takes over. I discovered that my experience was significantly more engaging when I approached it with a bit more sincerity, rather than trying to find flaws in the game.

DeepGame typically starts by establishing the setting, introducing key characters including yourself, the main character, along with a couple of supporting roles. It then presents a situation or quest that needs to be addressed. The game then poses the question, “What will you choose to do next?”

Engaging with the query is undeniably intriguing; there aren’t any specific prompts or options provided – instead, you have complete freedom to take the conversation wherever you wish. Remarkably, the game manages to keep pace, generating multiple paragraphs to advance the narrative following each of your replies.

Beyond this, if you’re using the premium version of ChatGPT, you can utilize the command “visualize” to create an image depicting the current situation, thanks to Dall-E. This feature might be overlooked if you approach it like reading a book, as I tend to imagine scenes myself while reading – but don’t disregard it! The images generated by the developers are delightfully inventive. It showcases the less polished side of DeepGame, which adds to its charm for me, and in case the image includes unexpected characters or elements that don’t align with your storyline, you can always regenerate it.

In my initial adventure, I transformed my detective character into quite the charmer – he flirted with not just one but two suspects in the missing person case. However, my fascination took over as I explored the boundaries of this sandbox world. I sent him to what appeared to be a 1920s speakeasy for a round of karaoke. Using ChatGPT on his phone, I had him track down the antagonist mobster’s real estate holdings. And in a moment of desperation, I even had him give a hostage a whiff of poppers to revive her.

After that, there was the pirate tale, kick-starting an exciting escapade to unearth hidden riches. My initial move? “I decided to declare my homosexuality.” To my joy, my fellow pirates reacted positively (using their own pirate-speak), and when I inquired if anyone wished to kiss me, one of them affectionately kissed me on the cheek and subtly led me back to the main thread: “‘That’s for courage,’ he chuckled. ‘Now, let’s get back to the real goal – those Spanish gold coins!'” (You can read the entire pirate story transcript here.)

DeepGame generally emphasizes morality, positivity, and good storytelling, yet it allows for creative exploration within these boundaries. For example, if you were to assume the role of a cult leader on an isolated island with your beloved, the game wouldn’t let you poison everyone because such action was deemed unethical and didn’t align with the principles of compelling storytelling. Instead, it suggested alternatives like a plague or a natural disaster for a more fitting narrative progression.

In an unexpected role-play scenario, I immersed myself deeply into the plot and characters, even stretching my creative abilities further. This approach led to a richer understanding of the subtleties within the game. However, that doesn’t imply that I didn’t find joy in playing around with its elements as well.

In my story, I was tasked with assisting the monarch in vanquishing a wicked force. Upon reaching the castle to aid the king on his quest, I broke the ice with a humorous remark: “I am Inigo Montoya; you took away my father’s life. Be ready to meet your end.” And so, Inigo Montoya embarked on a long voyage, and I became deeply engrossed as both the GPT and I added unexpected events. I collaborated with the king in uncovering a clandestine order utilizing dark magic to usurp the throne, deceived both the king and the order, fought evil alongside the king, and survived to recount the tale.

As I delved deeper into the details and used clever tactics to navigate the GPT’s rules, I found that it responded in kind, crafting intricate plots based on my inputs. To my astonishment, the game made pivotal decisions with each interaction. For example, when I hinted that my wife was considering a shift in allegiance, the game abandoned its usual positive and united tone – an unexpected move that led to my wife joining the order and us parting ways. Later, I found her again, decades later, after seeing a wanted poster with her image in a store. Despite their ideological differences, my protagonist and my wife still shared a deep love, which allowed me to track her down and reunite with her eventually.

Furthermore, the game adapted to my preferences over time, granting me more freedom in aspects like violence as long as it was consistent with the storyline. For example, when I was tasked by the king to infiltrate a clandestine organization, I hid and made incisive strikes at their ankles to create confusion, allowing my wife to sneak away with a powerful magical artifact undetected.

As I began handling the narrative thoughtfully, I grew attached to my character creations and the universe they inhabited. Once I ran out of fresh ideas for them, I asked the game to let me take on the role of their offspring instead, and the AI seamlessly continued the storyline.

Experiencing DeepGame correctly resembles exchanging moves with the creative AI, as opposed to confronting it. The game becomes intriguing when you accidentally drown your Sims, wondering if the developers have animated such an event. Rest assured, it’s enjoyable to observe your DeepGame fairy character transform into a Diet Coke can during critical situations, rather than the usual wand or crystal.

For this particular game, similar to any form of emergent storytelling, the most successful outcomes are achieved by unleashing your creativity and maintaining consistency while still enjoying yourself.
