This Cancelled DC Comics Series Just Returned to Netflix, And Was Met With a Disappointing RT Score

The previously canceled DC Comics series that used to be shown on Netflix, now back for another round, unfortunately hasn’t been received as favorably by critics and viewers during its conclusion compared to its initial season.

As a devoted fan, I eagerly watched the premiere of “The Sandman” on Netflix back on August 5, 2022, and was blown away by the overwhelming positive reception it received, even earning a Certified Fresh rating. The first season has left critics spellbound with an astonishing 88% approval rating, while audiences have shown their love too, giving it an impressive 81%. However, as we eagerly await Season 2, I must admit that its performance seems to be somewhat lackluster compared to the previous season. With a critical approval rating of 75% and an audience score of 72%, there’s no denying that fans like myself are hoping for another enchanting journey through the Dreaming realms in the near future!

Critics have been rather underwhelmed by the initial episodes of The Sandman Season 2, with some even predicting it could slide towards ‘rotten’ territory if the quality continues to dip. Melanie McFarland from [outlet name] describes the opening episodes as feeling like a dull, unrefreshing dream state, while Ed Power of the UK’s [outlet name] cautions that The Sandman may not appeal to everyone due to its dense, intellectual nature and lack of humor.

Netflix announced the renewal for another season of “The Sandman” in 2022, however, it was eventually canceled by the streaming service in January 2025, prior to its airing. This unexpected decision occurred during a period of uncertainty, resulting in delays or cancellations of some of his creative endeavors.

Initially, it was thought that the cancellation of “The Sandman” series was related to accusations against Neil Gaiman. However, the creative team later clarified that these allegations were unconnected to the cancellation, and the decision to end the show came after its second season. In fact, as showrunner Allan Heinberg explained in 2022, the series had always been centered solely on Dream’s story, and when they examined the remaining Dream material from the comics, they realized that there was sufficient content for only one more season.

The Sandman Had a Major Impact on Netflix Viewers

According to the widely acclaimed comics penned by Neil Gaiman and distributed by DC Comics, Netflix’s adaptation of Sandman has garnered recognition for its spot-on casting and adherence to the original storyline, which many found challenging to adapt. The series features Tom Sturridge as Dream / Morpheus, alongside Boyd Holbrook, Vivienne Archeampong, and several others in supporting roles.

Following the success of The Sandman, an expansion of its universe ensued. Additionally, Netflix introduced a show called Dead Boy Detectives, which revolves around two deceased boys who choose not to proceed to the afterlife and instead solve supernatural enigmas. Notably, Kirby reappeared as Death in this series, a character she played in The Sandman. It’s worth mentioning that there were whispers of a spinoff featuring Jenna Coleman’s beloved Johanna Constantine character in development.

Starting today, you can stream the first set of episodes for Season 2 of The Sandman on Netflix. The remaining episodes will be released in two batches – the second batch airs on July 24, 2025, and the season finale will air on July 31, 2025.
