This Avengers Deleted Scene Proves How Badly the MCU Fumbled 1 Character (& It’s Still Frustrating 13 Years Later)

This film revolutionized not just the MCU but also the entire movie industry, opening up a path for multiple cinematic universes to follow in its wake. However, what you see on screen is only a fraction of the original vision, as the production underwent various alterations before reaching theaters. Many scenes were ultimately discarded during editing. While some edits enhanced the film, others stirred up debate.

One group of extra scenes from the movie “The Avengers” would have showcased additional parts for Agent Hill, a key figure working alongside Colonel Nick Fury in S.H.I.E.L.D. Initially introduced in the 2012 film, she went on to appear in several other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) productions throughout the subsequent decade. However, her screen time in the theatrical version of “The Avengers” was significantly reduced compared to what was initially planned for the character. Nevertheless, Hill’s deleted scenes, which can be found online for fans to watch, demonstrate convincingly that the MCU underutilized this character more than any other.

A Deleted Scene Would Have Put Maria Hill Front and Center

Initially, the script for 2012’s The Avengers had a larger part planned for Agent Maria Hill. Although Fury had defied direct orders to assemble the Avengers, his actions simultaneously provided the world with its strongest defense ever.

Including scenes from Maria Hill’s perspective in The Avengers would have made the story more intriguing, keeping viewers guessing about her loyalty until the climax. Such scenes would have provided closer scrutiny of Hill, making audiences wonder if they could trust her. This approach would have given a more engaging introduction to her character and set the stage for future compelling narrative threads in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Regrettably, these intriguing deleted scenes did not make it into the final version of the film. As a result, Cobie Smulders’ character is largely confined to the sidelines without any significant moments that highlight her as an engaging new personality.

However, most of these roles failed to develop Maria Hill’s character significantly. Instead, she was often portrayed as Nick Fury’s sidekick, appearing alongside him in every project except Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., except for one instance where she had some development outside of her relationship with Fury. Unfortunately, the strong, SHIELD agent seen in the deleted scenes of The Avengers was largely absent, replaced by a character with little depth who shared the same name. Despite the strong bond between Hill and Fury, it’s clear that only one of these characters received substantial development.

Unfortunately, it appeared as though the MCU might delve deeper into Maria Hill’s character, but alas, she met an untimely end. Actress Cobie Smulders played a pivotal role in promoting Secret Invasion, leaving fans eager to uncover more about her history and personality. Regrettably, the Disney+ series decided to end Maria Hill’s life at the close of its premiere episode. Although some viewers speculated that this was another Skull imposter, it turned out that Hill had indeed perished in reality. The prospect of the MCU giving Maria Hill the screen time she deserved seemed promising until Secret Invasion. After more than a decade, Marvel Studios failed to find an appropriate means to develop Hill’s character, ultimately underutilizing the skilled Cobie Smulders in the process.

Can Maria Hill Ever Return in the MCU?

Maria Hill’s Story May Not Be Over Yet

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), where extraordinary events are commonplace and even deceased characters can return, there’s a possibility that Maria Hill could make an unexpected comeback. An intriguing way Marvel Studios might achieve this is by confirming that the character who was believed to be Hill in the premiere episode of Secret Invasion was actually a Skrull in disguise, thus implying that Hill is still alive.

However, another plausible scenario could be Marvel Studios declaring Secret Invasion non-canonical. Given the series’ negative reception from fans as an unfaithful adaptation of the original comic storyline, it’s been largely disregarded in subsequent MCU projects. By removing Secret Invasion from the main narrative, they can reintroduce Maria Hill without needing to explain away her death, making for a smoother continuity within the franchise. While this may seem unlikely, decanonizing Secret Invasion could provide an efficient solution to bring back Maria Hill without addressing her demise directly.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has ample opportunities to introduce Hill as the successor of Nick Fury as S.H.I.E.L.D.’s leader, a role her character appeared to be on track for before she met an untimely demise. Although S.H.I.E.L.D. is not prominently featured in the MCU following the events of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” the organization remains active behind the scenes, as evidenced in “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” If brought back, Hill would be an ideal choice to lead a reborn S.H.I.E.L.D., leveraging her strong connections with Earth’s mighty heroes to create a close alliance between the organization and the latest Avengers team.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but feel disappointed about the missed opportunities for the captivating character of Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite her immense potential, Marvel failed to delve deeper into her storyline, leaving it remarkably shallow. Originally, Agent Hill was intended to play a pivotal role in The Avengers, but unfortunately, most intriguing scenes featuring her were trimmed during editing, marking the beginning of a series of questionable creative decisions that ultimately led to her premature demise. I fervently hope that Marvel will reconsider and bring back Cobie Smulders to breathe new life into this beloved character, giving her the justice she deserves in the eyes of fans like me.
