“They gave Juno a Chun-Li skin and not Mei?” What are fans saying about the Overwatch 2 x Street Fighter 6 collaboration
The collaboration between Overwatch 2 and Street Fighter 6 drew criticism from some fans who were not pleased that Juno received the Chun-Li skin instead of Mei, finding it an uncomfortable choice.
A player stated on X that they dislike Mei, following the reveal of the Overwatch 2 x Street Fighter 6 collaboration featuring Juno as Chun-Li instead of Mei. Similar sentiments have been expressed by others, advocating for Mei to be the character receiving the skin. However, the reasoning behind this preference is unclear.
Overwatch 2 Mei’s nationality
The prevalent response online is that both Mei and Chun-Li are characters of Chinese origin. This contrasts with Juno, who was born on Mars. Many people feel that Mei is an ideal hero to receive this particular skin because of her nationality and characteristics. Some also argue that Juno didn’t necessitate a third collaboration skin, while Mei would be more fitting in the role.
In this collaboration, several critics claim that the company focuses more on financial gains than the characters themselves, as heroes like Juno, Kiriko, and Mercy (though not part of this particular partnership) are highly profitable. These three have been dubbed “the golden girls” of Overwatch. Interestingly, one user noted that Doomfist, the only character in Overwatch 2 inspired by a fighting game, is absent from this collaboration.
It seems some individuals have been posting inappropriate, disrespectful comments concerning Mei’s physique and looks. Offering opinions that are hurtful instead of constructive isn’t helpful or effective.
Mei x Juno as Chun-Li: “Mei can’t do roundhouse kicks!”
In the defense of Juno, not only were her main supporters present, but many players also favored Juno’s roundhouse kick over Mei’s in terms of strength, when comparing them to Chun-Li’s kicks. This point was crucial in choosing the skin for Juno rather than the damage hero. Additionally, some fans argue that there is no significant similarity between Chun-Li and Mei besides both being from East Asia to justify the selection of the skin. The comment made on X reads: “At least Juno can kick as her melee.
Mad at the wrong thing
When the community chooses to take a stance, they fully embrace it. Despite numerous people voicing their concerns over the Mei, Juno, and Chun-Li scenario in Overwatch 2 and Street Fighter 6, some individuals argue that there are more significant issues worth being upset about in this collaboration.
One user expressed their concern about the Overwatch 2 team’s choice to dress Kiriko in a Juri skin, as they are of different nationalities – Juri is Korean and Kiriko is Japanese. It’s important to note that these countries share a complex and challenging history, with Japan having colonized the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945.
Kiriko’s problem
The topic of “another Kiriko’s outfit” has resurfaced with the reveal that the support hero is one of the characters set to receive a skin in the Overwatch 2 x Street Fighter 6 crossover event. Since her debut in October 2022, Kiriko has accumulated a total of 30 skins. Due to this frequent appearance of new skins for Kiriko, she is now commonly known as “Government-Mandated Kiriko” within the Overwatch community. As per Overbuff statistics, Kiriko ranks fourth in terms of popularity among all heroes with a 4.03% pick rate, trailing behind Moira (4.23%), Mercy (8.31%), and Ana (8.67%). The rise in popularity of certain characters like Ana, Cassidy, Genji, Moira, and Mercy can be attributed to the introduction of the new game mode, Stadium, which offers a more limited selection of characters to choose from.
As a gamer, I must say, there’s a bit of dissatisfaction brewing within our gaming community about this new skin line. It’s not that these skins lack appeal; they’re quite the eye-catcher for many. The problem seems to be in the choice of characters from Street Fighter 6 that Overwatch 2 has represented. Some of us feel that perhaps different heroes could have better embodied the spirit of those iconic Street Fighter characters.
