Mega Evolution is making a comeback with Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and its inclusion in the Pokémon Horizons anime suggests it’s here to stay. First appearing in Generation VI, Mega Evolution is widely considered the most beloved battle mechanic the Pokémon series has introduced, and fans always get excited when a new one is revealed.
Many Pokémon have received powerful Mega Evolutions, but some popular choices have been overlooked. Not only have these fan-favorites not been able to Mega Evolve, but they haven’t even benefited from the special abilities introduced in different regions of the Pokémon world. If the new Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves games introduce more Mega Evolutions, these Pokémon should be a priority.
Butterfree Has Deserved a Mega Evolution Since Beedrill Got One
Butterfree is arguably the most recognizable Bug-type Pokémon, as it was the first Bug-type to reach its final evolutionary stage. Despite Beedrill receiving a Mega Evolution and Butterfree gaining a Gigantamax form, it has never been given the ability to Mega Evolve.
Butterfree has consistently been a fan favorite, even more so than Beedrill. Despite some fans feeling that Pokémon from the first generation get too much attention, Butterfree’s charming design has always been popular. There’s a huge number of fan-made concepts for a Mega Butterfree, and most agree it should not only become more powerful but also gain the Bug/Psychic type, highlighting its special abilities.
Politoed is a Competitive Legend Waiting to Make a Comeback
Many Pokémon fans remember Politoed as a charming member of Misty’s team in the anime. However, competitive players like me recall it as a dominant force during the Generation V competitive scene, often referred to as the “Weather Wars.” A Mega Evolution would give Politoed a chance to regain that level of competitive strength.
Giving Mega Politoed 100 extra stat points and another ability to use after Drizzle is active could make rain-based teams incredibly powerful once more. Plus, since Poliwrath is a Water/Fighting type, a Mega Evolution could set Politoed apart even more by changing its type to Water/Psychic.
Mega Milotic Would Be the Ace That Champion Wallace Has Always Deserved
Wallace is unique among Pokémon Champions because he doesn’t have a Legendary or particularly powerful Pokémon on his team. However, his main Pokémon, Milotic, would be a perfect candidate for a Mega Evolution, and fans would absolutely love to see it.
Milotic is widely considered to have a beautiful design, and even as a standard Pokémon, it was a memorable final challenge in Pokémon Emerald. A Mega Evolution for Milotic would likely make it an incredibly strong defensive Pokémon, and adding the Fairy type would not only suit its design but also significantly increase its power.
Flygon Has Somehow Never Gotten a Mega Evolution After 13 Years of Fans Begging
It’s disappointing that Flygon, a popular Pokémon from the Hoenn region, still hasn’t received a Mega Evolution. While many fans have requested a power increase to help it compete with other Dragon-type Pokémon, it remains relatively weak and hasn’t gotten the boost it needs.
Salamence, a powerful Dragon-type Pokémon from the Hoenn region, got a Mega Evolution years ago. Meanwhile, Flygon, despite having a much cooler design, has been overlooked. It’s time Flygon received a Mega Evolution to boost its strength, and maybe even a change in type to Bug/Dragon – something fans have wanted for a long time.
Infernape, Empoleon, and Torterra Are the Most Ignored Starter Trio
Among the first six generations of Pokémon, the starters from the Sinnoh region (Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup) are unique in that they haven’t received either Mega Evolutions or new regional forms. This is surprising, and many fans feel it’s unfair, considering how popular these Generation 4 starters are.
Infernape, Torterra, and Empoleon were all fan favorites, and Game Freak could easily profit by giving them Mega Evolutions. Currently, none of these Pokémon are strong in competitive battles, so Mega Evolutions would be a great way to make them useful again. A Mega Infernape could draw more on its Sun Wukong roots and become a Fire/Psychic-type, setting it apart from Pokémon like Blaziken and Emboar. Mega Empoleon could simply enhance its already excellent Water/Steel typing, and Mega Torterra could potentially lose its weakness to Ice-type attacks by changing its Ground-typing.
Luxray is a Favorite of Any Generation IV Fan
Most players of Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum have likely used a Luxray. While it’s a really awesome Electric-type Pokémon, it’s generally only effective for playing through the main story and isn’t very competitive against other players.
A Mega Luxray could be a powerful addition to competitive battling, and it would also satisfy a long-standing request from fans. For years, many players have mistakenly believed Luxray is both an Electric and Dark-type Pokémon, and a Mega Evolution could finally give them the type combination they’ve always imagined.
Hydreigon is One of the Only Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon Without a Mega Evolution
Mega Dragonite was a standout addition to Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Now, all of the powerful ‘Pseudo-Legendary’ Pokémon from the first six generations have either a Mega Evolution or a new regional form – with the exception of Hydreigon from Generation V.
While I don’t love the Dark/Dragon-type Pokémon from the Unova region, I understand its design, which is based on the Yamata no Orochi myth. If it were to receive a Mega Evolution, Hydreigon should keep its current typing—its high base stat total of 700 would be a significant improvement on its own. Ideally, this Mega Evolution would also have an ability that protects it from being easily defeated by Fairy-type attacks.
Mega Whimsicott Would Be Even More of an Adorable Menace
I’ve always loved Whimsicott, and even setting that aside, it deserves a Mega Evolution. Its combination of types, the Prankster ability, and diverse move options make it a reliably good support Pokémon – it just needs a boost to compete at its best in the current competitive scene.
Mega Whimsicott should keep its current type, and any boosted stats should focus on making it bulkier, specifically its Defense and Special Defense. This would make it even harder to defeat. Fortunately, a Mega Evolution would also likely make its design even more adorable and fluffy.
Victini Deserves a Mega Evolution More Than Any Other Mythical Pokémon
Generally, Mythical Pokémon can’t Mega Evolve, though there have been a few cases where this wasn’t true. If any Mythical Pokémon should be an exception, it’s Victini – it’s the favorite of game director Junichi Masuda.
Victini is a Fire and Psychic-type Pokémon originally from the Unova region, which is built around the idea of balance. It would be interesting to see a Mega Evolution of Victini become a Fire and Fighting-type, especially if it retained its cute, small limbs.
Mimikyu is One of the Most Popular Pokémon of the Last Several Generations
It’s rare for Pokémon introduced in recent generations – those that aren’t starter Pokémon or legendary creatures – to become truly popular with fans. Mimikyu is a rare exception, and while it’s not known for being particularly strong in battle, many fans would simply love to see it get a new design or evolution, even if it didn’t make it more powerful.
Mimikyu is a Ghost and Fairy-type Pokémon with a sad story: it’s a sweet creature that looks scary, so it disguises itself as Pikachu hoping to make friends. If Mimikyu were to Mega Evolve, it should stay a Ghost/Fairy type and gain the Intimidate ability, along with big increases to its Attack and Speed. While many fans want a powerful, monstrous form, I think it would be best if Mega Mimikyu transformed into something truly adorable, reflecting its kind personality.
