These 7 on-screen movie couples hated each other in real life
Off-camera friendship isn’t guaranteed by on-screen camaraderie. In fact, some of the most electric performances on screen come from actors who clashed during filming.
Get ready to have your faith in true love dampened a bit, as we delve into some of our favorite on-screen pairs who actually disliked each other off-camera.
Brace yourself for a dose of reality, as we explore beloved screen couples who didn’t see eye to eye behind the scenes.
1. Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling – The Notebook
In a rather charming twist reminiscent of a cinematic encounter, this pair appears to be an unattainable duo straight out of a movie. They create a film that leaves audiences swooning with what seems to be the most emotionally wrenching romance ever depicted. However, throughout their production, they engage in constant disputes. Eventually, they come to understand that despite their quarrels, they harbor feelings deeper than they initially realized – a realization that is as sweet as it is surprising. Awwwww.

As a dedicated admirer, I can share an intriguing piece of trivia about the making of “The Notebook.” Director Nick Cassavetes revealed that during some intense scenes, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams exchanged heated words and their on-screen chemistry extended off-camera. It got so bad that Gosling even requested another actress to deliver McAdams’ lines off-camera for him to react to, due to their strained relationship at the time. Quite a dramatic turn of events, don’t you think?
After that though, they ended up dating for three years. Ain’t love grand? And weird?
2. Nick Nolte and Julia Roberts – I Love Trouble
It’s surprising, isn’t it, that a time existed when Nolte would be the romantic lead for Roberts. This seems to be the norm when leading actresses are required to be significantly younger than their male co-stars. Interestingly, they didn’t get along well; Roberts described Nolte as “charming and nice, yet utterly disgusting” to The New York Times.
In response, Nolte countered, “It’s unfair to label someone as ‘disgusting.’ However, it’s common knowledge that she isn’t particularly pleasant.
We love trouble.
3. Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze – Dirty Dancing
As it transpires, Jennifer didn’t actually enjoy herself during the shoot as much as one might think. According to Swayze in his memoir, “she often fell into whimsical moods, making us redo scenes repeatedly… There were some tense exchanges… She appeared quite emotional at times, even breaking down in tears if someone offered constructive criticism.
It seems that the character Baby wasn’t literally 17, as Grey was 26 and Swayze was 34 at the time. It’s possible that she felt confined or overlooked due to being placed in a secluded spot?
4. Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis – Some Like It Hot
It’s said that Curtis jokingly compared kissing her to kissing Hitler, which might seem strange given that he can’t possibly know what that experience was like. During the shoot, he remarked that she acted strangely and seemed disorganized. However, considering their past romantic history, it’s possible he wasn’t entirely objective – in an unexpected twist reminiscent of a backlash against “The Notebook”, they had once been lovers, and having to work together continually might not have been easy given this history.
5. Anthony Hopkins and Shirley MacLaine – A Change Of Seasons
Apparently, Hopkins described his co-star in this less popular romance movie as extremely difficult to work with.” They portrayed a married couple, each involved in extramarital affairs, which at least added authentic tension to their scenes.
6. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson – The X-Files
Yes way.
In the show and movies, there was a prolonged will-they-won’t-they dynamic, which ultimately led to a confirmed romantic relationship. However, it seems that off-screen, the two actors didn’t always have a close friendship during filming.
In an interview with Metro back in 2008, Duchovny expressed: “Being too close can lead to disdain… We often disagreed over trivial matters. We found it unbearable to be around each other.
Despite discussing Anderson with great fondness during the same interview, implying a sibling-like bond between them, it’s clear that their disagreement was resolved. Additionally, they collaborated on multiple films and reboots on more than one occasion.
7. Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio – Romeo + Juliet

Despite their youth (she being 16 and him 22), these star-crossed lovers seemed to clash, as suggested by reports. It appears that he had a knack for practical jokes, while she was quite reserved. Consequently, they didn’t seem to get along well when the cameras weren’t around. Since then, he has earned the title of the King of All Party Bachelors, whereas she pursued her education at Yale. Different paths…
