These 5 shows are moving from Max to HBO (Here's what that means for us viewers)

As a dedicated gamer and avid viewer, I’m always on the lookout for new and exciting shows to add to my entertainment rotation. With the recent announcement from Warner Bros. Discovery about moving five highly-anticipated series from Max to HBO, I couldn’t help but share my thoughts on this development.

As a passionate gamer and avid fan of Warner Bros. Discovery’s content offerings, I’m excited to share some intriguing updates regarding their upcoming series lineup. It appears that the company, which manages both the linear television channel HBO and the streaming platform Max, has recently made some significant decisions.

As a gamer, I’d describe it this way: The lineup originally consisted of the “Harry Potter” series, the “IT” prequel show “Welcome to Derry,” DC Comics’ “Lanterns” and “The Penguin,” and the “Dune” prequel series “Dune: Prophecy.” All five were slated for exclusive release on Max. However, according to Deadline, these productions are now expanding their reach and will also be gracing our television screens.

As a gamer, I can tell you that from my perspective, it doesn’t make a massive difference to us viewers. The primary shift is that if Max were the sole platform for these titles, we would have received new episodes at midnight PT on premiere day. However, with the recent change, we’ll need to wait a bit longer. For instance, if “The Penguin” premieres at 9 p.m. ET on HBO, that’s when it will be available on Max as well. We won’t get the episodes before that time. Consequently, the release times remain consistent for both the channel and the streamer.

According to Deadline, Warner B Brodiscovery’s decision is driven by a rebranding strategy for their most prominent titles. Consider House of the Dragon season 2 as an illustration. Its success on HBO and Max is undeniable! In today’s era dominated by streaming platforms, it makes perfect sense for the company to leverage its linear broadcast option concurrently. This move could potentially attract more viewers to cable television.

From my perspective as a gamer, I don’t mind the change one bit. Whether it’s HBO or Max, as long as I can watch these fantastic shows, I’m content. Since I only have access to Max, I just need assurance that all projects will be available on this platform simultaneously with HBO. This arrangement benefits Warner BB Worldwide in their rebranding efforts while ensuring viewer satisfaction remains a priority for them.

In September 2024, “The Penguin” is scheduled to debut, while “Dune: Prophecy” is anticipated to come out during the fall of the same year. For “Welcome to Derry” and “Lanterns,” the plan is to make them available to the public in 2025. Lastly, the release of the “Harry Potter” series has been set for 2026.
