I’m really excited about this new take on Supergirl! They’re showing us Kara as someone deeply affected by losing her home and being completely alone with just Krypto. She’s not the confident hero we’re used to seeing right away, and honestly, that’s perfect. It feels like a really strong foundation for her journey to becoming that hero, and it’s happening at just the right moment. The new Supergirl release feels like it’s going to massively expand the DC Universe and finally give this character the attention she deserves!

She’s able to demonstrate her full strength, hitting alien tech with force that it was built to endure – something she wouldn’t normally do on Earth. Because she’s less restrained by anger and a willingness to fight, Supergirl can become everything Superman isn’t.

Superman often faces criticism for how he uses his incredible strength, and that criticism is fair – he should prioritize helping people more. But Supergirl started from a different place, simply enjoying her powers without those same expectations. Her story offers the origin story for a Kryptonian hero that audiences never got with Superman, as Clark Kent was always taught to be a protector. With Supergirl, we finally see a Kryptonian discover what it means to be a hero and how that journey transforms her.

Supergirl’s Rise Expands the DCU in a Huge Way

The first three DC Universe films heavily focus on Superman and Batman. While revisiting Superman and Supergirl for a new audience makes sense, the decision to establish Batman’s world without showing Batman himself feels odd. This approach suggests that significantly expanding the DCU with more films is probably not going to happen.

The Supergirl movie brings a new perspective to the DC Universe while still connecting to the Superman story. It has the potential to greatly broaden the cosmic scope of the DCU, and Lobo is just the first step. We can expect to see other characters from space introduced, including heroes like Martian Manhunter and the Green Lantern Corps, and villains such as Darkseid and Brainiac.

As a fan, I think Supergirl isn’t just a side story – it feels like a fantastic launchpad for the DC Universe, letting it expand much faster than the Marvel Cinematic Universe did. The movie hints at a growing universe, and it also feels like Supergirl herself could evolve a lot. Since she was a member of the Justice League in Justice League Unlimited, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see her join the team again down the line.

Though Kara wasn’t one of the original members, she’s proven to be incredibly dependable. Her background in space gives her valuable insight into potential enemies, not just Brainiac, who may emerge in the future. A Supergirl movie doesn’t need a massive budget to succeed within the DC Universe, but it has the potential to significantly reshape the franchise. While Brainiac is the current threat, Supergirl will establish the groundwork for facing even greater challenges down the line, leaving everything prepared for what’s to come.
