There's a new favorite to win the 2024 Formula 1 world championship

As a dedicated Formula 1 gamer with years of experience under my belt, I’ve witnessed the dominance of Red Bull and Max Verstappen since the early 2010s. However, the tides are changing in the world of F1, and McLaren is making waves that could lead them to the constructor championship for the first time since 1998.

In the 2022 Formula 1 season, Charles Leclerc and Ferrari enjoyed an exceptional beginning. However, for the first time since then, a driver other than those from Red Bull and Max Verstappen has emerged as the clear favorite to win the championship.

Starting in 2010, only two teams have taken home the world constructor championship title. Red Bull dominated the scene from 2010 to 2013, claiming all four titles during that period. Mercedes then took over with a winning streak of eight consecutive titles from 2014 to 2021. Most recently, Red Bull has emerged victorious in both the championships held since 2022.

During that 14-year span, only once did the driver and constructor world championship titles go to different people. This occurred in the year 2021. Max Verstappen claimed the driver championship, while Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes secured the constructor title.

McLaren last claimed the constructor championship back in 1998, following their disqualification from top spot during the 2007 season due to the espionage scandal. However, at FanDuel Sportsbook, McLaren now lead as the front-runners for this year’s title with odds of -130 ($130 wagered returns $100). Red Bull follows closely behind with odds of -110.

At DraftKings Sportsbook, McLaren have a price of $1.67 to win, while Red Bull are priced at $2.10 (a bet of $100 would result in a $110 return).

McLaren now favored to win 2024 Formula 1 title

Starting from the Miami Grand Prix in early May, where Lando Norris clinched his initial victory for McLaren, it has been evident that their car is quicker than Red Bull’s. This comes as a surprise to many who anticipated Red Bull would be even more formidable this season, having won 21 out of 22 races in the previous year with Verstappen taking the win an impressive 19 times.

Over the past seven races following the Florida trip, Verstappen has earned more points than Norris with a total score of 129 versus Norris’s 106. However, it’s important to note that Oscar Piastri has surpassed Norris with 108 points, while Perez has added just 21 points to Red Bull’s tally, finishing no better than seventh position during this period.

In the last seven races, McLaren has earned more points than Red Bull in six of them. After McLaren’s successful 1-2 finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, Red Bull’s lead in the constructor championship is now only 51 points. It’s becoming increasingly evident that having two quick drivers is really benefiting McLaren.

As a seasoned Formula One enthusiast who has been following the sport for decades, I have seen many twists and turns in the driver championship race. Max Verstappen has long been considered a formidable contender, and rightly so, given his impressive track record and raw talent. However, having witnessed the unpredictability of this sport, I can’t help but feel that his current status as the favorite to win the title is not as solid as it once was.

Having a commanding 76-point advantage over Norris in the standings, Verstappen is heavily favored to win according to FanDuel, with odds of -600, compared to Norris’ underdog status at +410. Similarly, DraftKings puts Verstappen as the strong favorite at -750, while Norris is the underdog at +350.

Although Verstappen has experienced a losing streak in his last three races, which is his first such occurrence since late 2021, he continues to be the driver with the most podium finishes this year, having achieved this feat a total of seven times. Furthermore, he has triumphed in all three sprint races as well.

As eleven races out of the total twenty-four in the 2024 Formula 1 season remain, it is evident that the championship battles are far from decided. Although they haven’t secured a constructor championship since the turn of the millennium, McLaren last saw one of their drivers claim the title back in 2008 when Lewis Hamilton was driving for them.
