There probably won't be another movie in Ti West's X trilogy and here's why

As a seasoned horror enthusiast with over two decades of movie-watching under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment at Ti West’s apparent decision to put an end to the X trilogy. The X franchise has been a rollercoaster ride of suspense, gore, and unexpected twists, with Mia Goth’s captivating performances leaving me on the edge of my seat.

Contrary to earlier speculations, it appears that Ti West is seriously considering ending the X trilogy permanently. However, he expresses a keen interest in continuing to collaborate with actress Mia Goth, who has portrayed various characters across the films X, Pearl, and MaXXXine.

During a Reddit AMA in August, it was disclosed that West underwent a shift in his perspective. A user inquired whether the director had plans for another film in the trilogy and if he wished to continue collaborating with Goth.

His response reads, “would love to keep working with mia. x trilogy [probably] done though. happy with where we left it.”

This year in February, I shared with What’s Under the Bed on YouTube, as Bloody Disgusting reported, that I’ve got this quirky concept brewing for a potential fourth film. At that moment, I was eagerly awaiting the audience’s reaction to my upcoming project, MaXXXine, which hadn’t been unveiled yet.

In a few months, West shared with Entertainment Weekly that MaXXXine might signal the conclusion of the Maxine era. Yet again, he hinted at a potential concept he’s considering, which could connect to the previous three films. Interestingly, he also expressed his desire to conclude MaXXXine and take a brief hiatus from the series.

I’ll say that, if there’s more to be done in this ‘X’ franchise, it’s certainly not what people are expecting it to be. It’s not just picking up again a few years later and whatever. It’s different in the way that ‘Pearl’ was an unexpected departure. It’s another unexpected departure.

What changed?

Although West never fully verified a fourth film in the series, his numerous remarks hint at an idea he was considering to develop further, which could have continued the narrative. However, the director also emphasized that this unspecified concept would represent a significant departure from past instalments and thus may feel disconcerting for fans.

Although MaxXXXine drew more controversy than X or Pearl, it was still widely acclaimed and went on to be the highest-earning film in the trilogy. Given this success, it’s unlikely that the movie’s financial performance prompted West to change his stance. Instead, after completing MaxXXXine, he might want to take a moment to reflect and adjust, determining what’s next for him creatively. It could be that the concept he initially envisioned didn’t materialize as expected, or maybe it no longer sparks his inspiration. Since he’s content with how things ended in MaxXXXine, why risk altering a good outcome?

I believe the franchise could use a break from making more movies, as I concur with West’s opinion that the third film concluded both the story and Maxine’s arc satisfactorily. Yet, I hope they collaborate on another project in the future, and I’d be thrilled if he ever decides to reveal his concept for a fourth movie, even if it ultimately doesn’t come to fruition.

MaXXXine is now streaming on Max.
