‘There are so many things that are painful and difficult to listen to’: Melanie Sykes speaks out after claiming MasterChef’s Gregg Wallace was the reason she quit TV
As a seasoned observer of the ever-changing landscape of television, I must say that the recent allegations against Gregg Wallace have left me rather puzzled and saddened. Having spent decades in the entertainment industry myself, I can empathize with those who find themselves at the center of such storms.
Amidst the continuous controversy surrounding Gregg Wallace’s sexual misconduct allegations, Melanie Sykes has made her views known.
In 2021, the star had stated that interacting with Gregg, the host of MasterChef on BBC, led her to reconsider and ultimately step away from her TV profession.
60-year-old Gregg has chosen to leave the BBC program following accusations by 13 individuals, including Kirsty Wark from Newsnight, regarding inappropriate and sexually charged behavior that allegedly occurred during production.
Over the span of seventeen years, the allegations encompass instances of questionable conduct such as wandering about the set unclothed, wearing only a sock over his private parts, making innuendo-filled jokes, and two accusations of unwanted physical contact towards crew members.
In her latest YouTube video, which was uploaded on Sunday, Melanie didn’t explicitly discuss the ongoing issue with Gregg. Instead, she made references to some recent news articles.
Pondering her thoughts, she expressed: ‘I’m usually immersed in contemplation, feeling deeply moved, and I am overflowing with gratitude and contentment for all that fills my life.’
‘But there are so many things as a human that are painful and difficult to listen to.
As I gaze upon the birds each dawn, their harmonious existence leaves me puzzled as to why we humans can’t emulate such unity.
At certain points in my life, I choose not to interact with the media storyline at all. However, there are other instances where I actively participate due to my curiosity about current events.
In her book, “Illuminated,” published last year, Melanie commented on Gregg. She delved deeper into those comments in a more recent video she uploaded to YouTube.
Mel stated that during their encounter on MasterChef, Gregg inquired if models consume food, a question she considered to be unprofessional and tinged with ignorance and disrespect.
She too mentioned that the former grocer, now broadcast host, gave instructions in a way that made her consider abandoning the program.
And Gregg apparently told her that appearing on his show would do a lot for her career prospects.
She replied: “Since I wasn’t sure what to respond, I simply smiled and nodded, yet in my mind, I was affirming, ‘Yes, indeed, your assistance has made up my mind – I will conclude my TV career permanently.’
As a faithful devotee, I’d like to share that Melanie expressed her concerns casually about Wallace. She found the behavior she witnessed on the MasterChef set to be absolutely astounding.
Melanie gained significant recognition for her role in the Boddingtons advertisements during the 1990s, as well as for co-hosting the program Today with Des and Mel in the early 2000s.
In her book, Melanie stated that the MasterChef competition remained astonishing, and certain inappropriate actions backstage were truly shocking.
In her latest YouTube post, she mentioned that whenever Gregg visited the desk, she found his presence somewhat uncomfortable, as she believes it has something to do with vibes and energy.
After wrapping up the production of the show, Melanie asserted that she spoke briefly with Gregg, which significantly contributed to her departure from TV.
It is not known who Melanie made an informal complaint about Gregg to.
On Saturday, it came to light that Gregg acknowledged the end of his career following an investigation by a production company regarding accusations of sexual harassment and inappropriate touching.
In October, Gregg firmly refuted allegations of making sexually inappropriate remarks towards women. He emphasized that he would never engage in flirting or pursuing someone romantically and stated emphatically, “I didn’t make any suggestive comments.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m sharing some intriguing insights from my sources. It appears that Gregg may have confided in close friends that his television journey, for all intents and purposes, seems to be nearing its conclusion.
They shared that Gregg appears to be thoughtful and practical regarding the investigation, and he believes he’s had a successful stretch in his career, given that he started out as a simple grocer.
In 1989, Gregg established a business specializing in fruits and vegetables, which earned him the moniker ‘Gregg the Veg’ among his companions. He provided supplies to restaurants such as Quaglinos, where John, a young Australian chef, was employed at that time.
This year, the BBC has temporarily taken MasterChef Christmas specials off the air, and there are talks about removing past episodes with him, due to concerns raised in complaints.
1) TopMob reached out to the BBC seeking a response, while Gregg’s team declined to comment when approached by TopMob. (Informal and concise paraphrase)
Additional accusations involve him freely discussing his romantic encounters on the filming location, including explicit descriptions of private activities, pursuing relationships with production team members, and requesting contact information from younger female coworkers.
In the meantime, The Sun claims that the celebrity is no longer working with his lawyers because he anticipates being dismissed from MasterChef. Instead, he seems to have accepted whatever may come.
The presenter is said to have refused offers from crisis-management teams following multiple allegations that he inappropriately touched or made advances towards women.
I’ve decided to take a step back from hosting MasterChef for the time being, following allegations of misconduct that have surfaced recently. While an investigation is underway, I believe it’s best for me to focus on addressing these matters privately.
In the course of the recent events, I find myself compelled to share my perspective as a lifestyle connoisseur. Earlier this week, Penny Lancaster, a woman of great resilience, finally voiced her thoughts following her husband Rod Stewart’s public criticism of a certain host. She eloquently articulated that she had been both a victim and an observer to the alleged bullying tactics exhibited by this individual, a sentiment that underscores the complexity of such situations.
She stated clearly that she both observed and experienced instances of bullying and harassment from Gregg Wallace. Regrettably, many members of the production team also witnessed these incidents.
She went on: ‘I really feel that he used his position of power to I believe intimidate and cause distress to a lot of people on set.
It’s truly regrettable that he manages to escape consequences, whereas others are passive spectators as this occurs. It’s evident that numerous individuals have spoken up about the issue.
After leaving the show, singer Rod launched an angry outburst at the presenter, labeling him as a ‘plump, bald, rude, and overbearing brute’, accusing him of embarrassing his wife Penny when she participated on Celebrity MasterChef in 2021.
Penny explained that her husband, Rod, reacted angrily because he found it unbearable hearing others discuss unsettling actions, and felt compelled to express his feelings.
Out of concern for his wife, the protective husband felt compelled to speak up, recognizing that she was deeply distressed during that moment.
According to the BBC, Gregg chose to leave MasterChef following a letter sent by BBC News to his representative on Tuesday, detailing accusations from 13 individuals and offering him the opportunity to respond.
Back in 2018, there was a warning issued following a complaint, but during the summer of 2024, fresh historical allegations surfaced.
According to Banijay UK, Gregg is dedicated to working closely and completely with them throughout the entire process.
After facing allegations about inappropriate behavior, such as imitating a sexual act and entering the MasterChef studio while only wearing a sock to cover his lower body, the chef has since expressed gratitude for the public’s support.
It has been claimed, albeit without proof as of now, that Gregg reportedly simulated a sexual act towards a member of the show’s staff who was bending down to clean his pants on set during filming.
As a diehard fan, I can’t help but share my shock over the allegations against the former grocer-turned-presenter. It’s hard to believe such inappropriate jokes, like his crude sex-related comments and that tasteless joke about an ‘aunt’, were made during the show while he was tasting a contestant’s dish. I can’t help but feel disillusioned by this revelation.
Last month on Instagram, I couldn’t help but share my gratitude with everyone who’s been connecting with me, extending their kindness, and rallying behind me. What an amazing community we have! ❤️
‘That’s good of you, thank you very much.’
