There are currently 4 must-see horror movies on Max's top 10 list

As a horror enthusiast with over three decades of chilling experiences under my belt, I must say that Max’s top 10 movie list for September 26 is an absolute goldmine for any fear-loving individual like myself! The fact that four horror masterpieces made it to the list, with two from this year and another two from times long past, just goes to show that terror transcends time.

Have you taken a look at Max’s current top 10 movie list? As of September 26, it seems that the genre of horror has been dominating, with four spine-tingling horror movies making the cut as must-watch picks. Two of these chilling films were released this year, while the other two have graced our screens at different points in time. One of these horror movies, I would go so far as to say, is one of our favorite scary movies from 2024.

Hey there! It seems like you might be intrigued by what I’m about to share. You might be asking yourself, “What are these horror films?” Well, let me not keep you in suspense any longer. We’ll dive right in, starting with the first movie on my list this year, “I Saw the TV Glow“. This chilling masterpiece is currently ranked No. 2 by Max and happens to be one of my personal favorites too!

I Saw the TV Glow (2024)

It’s clear to me that A24 anticipated a success with the film “I Saw the TV Glow.” To begin with, it boasts an engaging and unique concept. It’s a psychological horror movie directed by Jane Schoenbrun, focusing on two distressed teenagers, Owen and Maddy, who forge a strong connection through their shared fascination with a cryptic late-night TV program. This show serves as a temporary escape from their ordinary lives.

Yet, a turn of events unfolds when the series unexpectedly ends. This leaves the two teenagers grappling with the emotional upheaval and profound questions about life that arise from its termination. They are compelled to face their personal identities and existential quandaries, issues they hadn’t previously encountered due to the show’s premature conclusion.

Justice Smith (from the movies “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” and “The Voyeurs”) takes on the character of Owen, while Brigette Lundy-Paine (known for “Atypical” and “Bill & Ted Face the Music”) plays Maddy. The remaining cast members include Helena Howard, Lindsey Jordan, Conner O’Malley, Emma Portner, Ian Foreman, Fred Durst, and Danielle Deadwyler.

The Shining (1980)

In a nod to the chilling ’80s masterpiece, “The Shining,” let me remind you of that unforgettable line, “Here’s Johnny!” This movie holds a significant place at No. 8 on Max’s list of favorite films, and I wholeheartedly concur with its inclusion.

According to Stephen King’s novel titled “The Shining,” the story revolves around Jack Nicholson as a struggling author and former alcoholic who accepts the position of a winter caretaker for a mysterious hotel in Colorado, which is believed to be haunted. As the snowy season progresses, his mental health starts to decline, edging him towards insanity. Alongside Nicholson, notable cast members include Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers, Barry Nelson, Philip Stone, Joe Turkel, and others.

Here’s what some critics had to say about this horror masterpiece via Rotten Tomatoes:

The supernatural joins forces with psychosis in Stanley Kubrick’s superb adaptation of a Stephen King bestseller.

Wendy Ide

The Shining might be one of the most accessible classics to new viewers of today to understand why it is, in fact, one of the greatest and most influential horror films of all time. The ending is still mind-blowing after all these years.

Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)

If you’re in search of a humorous take on horror movies, I highly recommend giving “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” a horror-comedy, a watch. It’s one of A24’s standout horror films and it’s no surprise that it’s currently holding the No. 9 position on Max’s movie list.

The film centers around a group of friends celebrating at a secluded mansion amidst a hurricane. To add excitement, they opt for a party game called “Bodies Bodies Bodies.” In this game, one participant acts as the murderer while others try to identify who the killer is within their group. However, what initially seems like an entertaining whodunit-style game soon spirals into terror when real-life murders start happening.

In this hilarious blend of horror and comedy, Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Myha’la Herrold, Chase Sui Wonders, Rachel Sennott, Lee Pace, and Pete Davidson take center stage, promising a thrilling experience filled with laughter.

The Watchers (2024)

To round off the list is the supernatural horror film “The Watchers,” ranked at No. 10 on Max’s list. While it didn’t win favorable comments from critics, give it a chance if you can. It may appeal to you. I must say, its concept is intriguing, and the performances of the actors are commendable.

The film features Dakota Fanning portraying a budding artist who gets stranded in a vast forest in western Ireland alongside three other individuals. Every evening, they are pursued by enigmatic night creatures. Actors Georgina Campbell, Olwen Fouéré, Oliver Finnegan, Alistair Brammer, and John Lynch join Fanning in the ensemble cast.

At the moment, all four scary films mentioned earlier can be streamed on Max. Be sure to give them a watch whenever you have some time!
