The Xbox Avatar Editor is Due to Shut Down in January 2025
As a long-time Xbox gamer, it’s always been a joy to personalize my gaming space with unique avatars that reflect my personality. The new Xbox Avatars introduced in 2018 were a fantastic step forward, allowing me to create a digital version of myself that was not only fun but also engaging.
Back in the day, did you recall when Microsoft unveiled the new Xbox Avatars for the Xbox One? Through the Xbox Avatar Editor, users had an opportunity to create a fairly accurate digital version of themselves, however, as of January 2025, this feature is scheduled to be discontinued.
Beginning on January 9, 2025, the Xbox Avatar Editor app will no longer function because we’re prioritizing other player experiences and have seen low user interaction. This change was shared through an update to our support page.
On both Xbox consoles and PCs, players have the freedom to customize their gaming adventure by adjusting dynamic backdrops and color schemes for their profiles. Additionally, they can utilize Xbox Original Avatars, profile themes, and gamerpics to make their experiences more personalized.
Any purchases made for Xbox Avatars from November 1st, 2023 up until the closure of the Avatar Editor app on January 9th, 2025 will be refunded. If you have used your Avatar as your Gamerpic, it will continue to appear that way. However, please note that after the app’s closure, you won’t be able to make any updates to your Avatar, so be careful not to grow a beard or make other changes that you might regret later on!
You can relax knowing that the original Xbox 360 Avatars (introduced in 2008 and now called ‘Xbox Original Avatars’) will still be around. This means they’ll work with older games that use them, such as A Kingdom for Keflings, when played on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S systems.
