The X-Men Could Have Been Killed By Doctor Doom in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Theory

The upcoming films will feature some beloved X-Men characters from the movies originally produced by Fox, starting in 2000. This includes actors like Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn. The cast may grow further, as Chris Evans is now confirmed to reprise his role as Steve Rogers, even though he wasn’t initially announced.

The latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday features a somber conversation between Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, hinting at death and a last stand against Doctor Doom. We also see James Marsden’s Cyclops amidst destruction, removing his visor and letting out a scream. It looks like the X-Men are facing certain doom, but could the trailer actually be showing us what happens as a result of Doomsday?

The X-Men’s ‘Doomsday’ Fate May Have Already Been Revealed in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

In Deadpool & Wolverine, Hugh Jackman’s Logan is deeply haunted by the tragedy that destroyed the X-Men, a tragedy he feels responsible for because he wasn’t at the X-Mansion when it happened. The film shows Wolverine grappling with the memory of his teammates’ screams and his guilt over not being able to save them, but the specifics of what happened remain a mystery.

The movie Deadpool & Wolverine hinted at a scenario similar to a comic book storyline where Mysterio deceived Wolverine into harming the X-Men. Specifically, the film suggested humans were tricked into launching a surprise attack on the X-Mansion, defeating the mutants living there. However, the movie didn’t fully explain how such a powerful team could be overcome, leaving the details unclear. This ambiguity might have been intentional.

Dr Doom Could Have Orchestrated the X-Men’s Demise in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

The circumstances surrounding the deaths of most of the X-Men across the multiverse remain unclear, and it’s likely Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is saving that story for later. When Deadpool & Wolverine came out in 2024, the broad outline for future films like Doomday and Secret Wars was probably already established, even if the full scripts weren’t finished yet.

It appears the mystery around the X-Men’s fate was intentional, and we’ll likely see how their story ends in Avengers: Doomsday. The teaser scenes strongly suggest these will be some of the last moments for the original team. Since Deadpool & Wolverine didn’t give them a grand finale, it’s possible the plan all along was for their true final battle to be part of Avengers: Doomsday.

If Viktor von Doom is indeed responsible for the deaths of these heroes, it would provide a strong motivation for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine to participate in Avengers: Secret Wars and help defeat the man who destroyed his friends and family.

Although Avengers: Doomsday won’t hit theaters until December 18, 2026, a new teaser trailer will be shown in cinemas in just over a week, offering another glimpse of what’s to come. As the countdown to a major shift in the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues, expect more previews and hints over the next year.
