Good news for Marvel subscribers: the much-criticized movie *Madame Web* will be removed from the streaming service on November 14th. The 2024 film, starring and , was a box office disappointment and even earned several Golden Raspberry Awards, making it one of the worst-received superhero movies in recent years.
As a huge cinema fan, I have to say *Madame Web* sadly followed the same path as *Morbius* – another really disappointing Marvel movie from Sony. Honestly, it feels like this is why Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is currently on hold – you’d think Cassandra Webb, with her supposed foresight, could have *seen* that coming! They assembled a pretty great cast – Sydney Sweeney, Dakota Johnson, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, Emma Roberts, and even Adam Scott – but it just didn’t translate to a good film. It’s unfortunately just another poorly received movie in Sony’s Marvel collection.
Originally announced in 2019, the movie *Madame Web* didn’t start filming until 2022. When it was finally released in February 2024 – a time often considered bad luck for films – many people were already skeptical due to Sony’s previous flop, *Morbius*. While the *Venom* movies had been successful, other films connected to Spider-Man hadn’t performed well, and *Madame Web* failed to earn back its $100 million production cost during its disappointing run in theaters.
Is ‘Madame Web’ Really That Bad?
Sony
For a while, it seemed like the movie *Madame Web* would receive extremely low ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, after nearly 270 reviews, it currently has a score of just 10%, with most critics agreeing that it’s poorly made, features stiff acting, and is entirely predictable.
Superhero and action movies often receive criticism for being predictable, which can lower their overall scores. While audiences gave *Madame Web* a 53% rating, the general reaction to the film was still largely negative, with many reviewers calling it the worst Marvel movie yet. The film had potential, but Sony seems unable to create successful Marvel movies without the direct involvement of Marvel Studios.
The movie *Morbius* came out shortly after the massive hit *Spider-Man: No Way Home*. However, despite initially removing all connections to Spider-Man that were hinted at in the trailer, the film included a scene after the credits with Vulture (Michael Keaton) from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, suggesting a potential crossover. But audiences weren’t impressed with this attempt to link the two universes.
The movie *Venom: Let There Be Carnage* hinted at a showdown between Tom Hardy’s Venom and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, promising a crossover within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, this ultimately led to just a brief cameo by Venom in *Spider-Man: No Way Home* before he was sent back to his own universe in *Venom: The Last Dance*. Originally, Venom was planned to have a more significant part in the story, but those scenes were cut during the filmmaking process.
If you haven’t watched *Madame Web* yet, don’t worry about rushing to see it. You can safely skip it when you’re browsing Netflix, as it will likely be available on another streaming service soon. Just keep an eye out for it if you’re curious!
