The worst episode of Star Trek: The Original Series, according to IMDB, surprisingly isn’t Spock’s Brain
As a seasoned gamer and Star Trek enthusiast who’s seen more than his fair share of intergalactic adventures, I must say that some episodes from Star Trek: The Original Series have left me scratching my head more than others. Among the least favorite are “Spock’s Brain,” “The Way to Eden,” and “The Alternative Factor.” However, if I were to pick one that makes me squirm the most, it would be “And the Children Shall Lead.
Among the most infamously criticized episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series, two often mentioned are “Spock’s Brain” and “The Way to Eden.” Some fans might also include “The Alternative Factor,” a contender according to Slashfilm. Another episode frequently brought up is “The Turnabout Intruder,” although it doesn’t have the lowest IMDB rating, sitting at 5.2. The third season episode, “And the Children Shall Lead,” holds one of the lower ratings for a Star Trek episode overall.
Previously, I’ve discussed extracting silver linings from less favorable Star Trek episodes and have highlighted the merits of “The Way to Eden” in an essay for Startrek.com. Interestingly enough, there are redeeming qualities in “And the Children Shall Lead,” more so than many other episodes that are commonly criticized as poorly executed, such as “The Alternative Factor“. However, it is quite challenging to identify any positive aspects in the latter episode, particularly given its subpar special effects.
Let me clarify. While I find And the Children Shall Lead somewhat weak, it has a unique topic – mind control, which could potentially occur in reality. However, other episodes like Spock wandering without a brain or participating in a jam session with space hippies make Spock appear absurd. In contrast, only Melvin Bell, dressed in a shimmering shower curtain, appears ridiculous in And the Children Shall Lead.
As a gamer, I’d gladly endure another round of “And the Children Shall Lead” instead of “The Way to Eden.” The tunes in the latter just stick in your mind like a stubborn melody you can’t seem to shake off.
