"The Wizard should be afraid...of me" says Cynthia Erivo in the second trailer for Wicked

As a long-time fan of musical theatre and the original novel “Wicked” by Gregory Maguire, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming film adaptation! The second official trailer has truly piqued my interest, offering a tantalizing glimpse into the untold story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t contain my excitement as I share the news that the second official trailer for the highly anticipated film musical “Wicked” has just dropped! Unlike the initial promotional glimpses we’ve seen so far, this new trailer presents a tone that sets it apart. For those of you who are new to the musical, this is your first sneak peek into what makes the Land of Oz refer to the protagonist as the Wicked Witch of the West.

“I don’t cause commotions; I am one.”

The trailer opens on a well-known moment of triumph. As a black witch’s hat rests on a puddle of water, Glinda the Good Witch (played in all her loveliness by Ariana Grande) announces, “Fellow Ozians, the Wicked Witch of the West is dead.” The scene changes from the climax of The Wizard of Oz and we see a propaganda poster of a comically menacing, green-skinned witch looming over the Emerald City. The witch in question cowers as she is hunted down. She is burned in effigy. “Don’t let her get away,” an unidentified voice commands.

After this, Glinda shares the complete tale with everyone. It’s here where we find Glinda and Elphaba first crossing paths at school. The phrase “Unlimited” becomes a recurring theme for Elphaba, as she expresses it in both its literal and emotional senses – “Together, we’re boundless.” Throughout their time together, Glinda extends warmth and compassion towards her unusual roommate. Meanwhile, Michelle Yeoh’s character, Madame Morrible, nurtures Elphaba’s destructive powers, finding them truly extraordinary.

As they keep on crooning about overcoming every battle, “we’ll conquer every mountain as we stand together, denying the pull of gravity,” the scene unfolds with bursts of intense energy and people showing signs of fright at Elphaba’s side. She sets free a young cowardly lion, causing a stir, and Fiyero playfully chides her, saying she creates chaos wherever she goes. But Elphaba, not yet wicked, retorts, “I don’t stir up trouble, I am the one who causes it.”

And this is the message that fills out the rest of the trailer. We see private moments of goodness and love between friends, but as Elphaba takes her steps into the wider world, she becomes unstoppable. The Wizard sinisterly urges her to follow a certain road to lead directly to him and we see her conjuring a flight spell as the Wizard looks on in dread and amazement. Suddenly, his loyal monkey guards become her flying hordes of loyal servants and she sets them free.

As the forces of the sorcerer approach, he remarks that the most effective method for uniting people is by presenting them with a formidable adversary. She’s labeled as “the evil enchantress” as she shatters a window and soars above the Emerald City on her flight.

Glinda encourages, “Don’t fear,” but Elphaba, having decided to challenge everything she had longed for because the Wizard is a deceitful despot, responds with the words preceding her powerful “Defying Gravity” in Act I finale: “It’s me who should make the Wizard tremble with fear.”

The whole story behind Elphaba’s reign of terror comes to theaters on November 22, 2024.
