The Wire actor Tray Chaney shares tearful update after his teen son was carried away by a tornado

Actor Tray Chaney, known for his role in The Wire, posted about the health status of his son Malachi following a tornado on May 29 which displaced them from their home.

Last week, it was disclosed by Chaney, known for his role as Malik ‘Poot’ Carr on the renowned HBO series, that a tornado had demolished his family’s residence in Locust Grove, Georgia, which is near Atlanta, while he was asleep.

Malachi was violently pulled into a whirlpool and tossed approximately the distance of a football field (around 300 feet) away from his house, as his father was left unconscious after the incident. Following this, his father regained consciousness from the debris of their home, which had completely disintegrated and caved in around him.

Thankfully, my son managed to pull through, though he endured life-altering injuries such as shattered ribs, numerous scrapes across his body, and a multitude of facial bone fractures.

On Wednesday, Chaney conveyed good news to TMZ. He disclosed that his child was now in a less critical ward, having been transferred there following six days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital.

However, this will be a lengthy trip and a protracted healing process. He made it clear that they are still in the hospital.

Chaney boldly stated, “We fought a storm like a tornado and emerged victorious,” all the while acknowledging that everyone in the house was potentially at risk during the natural catastrophe.

As Malachi tends to wounds on his upper body from deep gashes, an amazing occurrence took place: his lower body remained unscathed, for he happened to be wearing jogging pants when he got sucked upwards.

Chaney mentioned that he’d sustained a head injury when the house collapsed, causing him to lose consciousness. Upon regaining awareness, he discovered himself buried under the debris of his ruined home, which had landed on him while he was lying in the mud.

In a rush, neighbors came to aid him and removed debris from him. However, when he managed to peer inside his house, he discovered that almost everything was damaged beyond repair, except for his mobile phone, remarkably still functioning.

At first, it wasn’t immediately apparent where Malachi could be found, since the violent winds had carried him off to a wooded area close to their residence.

In a recent conversation, I shared, “Life has thrown us into a whirlwind of challenges, reminiscent of a stormy battlefield.” What makes it particularly hard is witnessing my young charge, Malachi, navigate through this turmoil with resilience. Each day, he wakes up not knowing the events that transpired the previous day.

Malachi’s hospital stay coincided with his birthday on June 1.

Despite having a subdued birthday celebration for his son in the hospital, Chaney played a recording of a special message from Shaquille O’Neal, wishing him a happy birthday.

The actor reflected upon the destructive tornado, subsequently classified as an EF-2 strength storm, and confessed that he hadn’t recognized a tornado was approaching until he heard a sound similar to a train approaching while lying in bed.

Chaney recollected suddenly spinning to his right, only to find that his walls, TVs, dressers, and bed were all overturned. In a startling twist, he found himself floating in mid-air,” Chaney explained, his voice thickening with emotion. “All I can recall is shielding my face with my arms like this and yelling out for my son’s name.

Fortunately, when the tornado struck, Ayesha, Chaney’s spouse, was not at home. However, she came back soon after the storm had passed and found the devastation left behind.

As I ponder the days ahead, I can’t help but wonder about my family’s future, with our cherished home reduced to ruins and our once stable life disrupted.

In just six short days, Ayesha, myself, and our son Malachi have quite a journey ahead of us. With uncertainty looming, I can’t predict the future, so we’ll keep moving forward.

Since then, the family has established a GoFundMe campaign to aid their rebuilding efforts. They are temporarily residing with friends, in hotels, or at shelters. As of Wednesday night, the fundraiser was nearly $1,500 away from meeting its initial target of $100,000.
