The Wildest ‘John Wick’ Spin-off Is Now Being Worked On (And It Sounds Perfect)

The John Wick universe is growing! The incredibly popular action series, famous for its stunning action sequences, already has several spin-offs and a fifth movie planned. However, the newest concept is truly special – a fantastic blend of genres that’s sure to delight fans of action, thriller, and neo-noir films.

A new report from Variety states that up-and-coming writer Austin Everett – known for his sci-fi script The Traveler, which was added to the Black List in 2019 and is now being developed – has written a script for a new action movie set in the John Wick universe. The film will blend elements of samurai films and Westerns.

The writer isn’t sharing many specifics about the potential project right now, only stating, “that’s probably as much as I can say,” but the concept of a Western-samurai film within the Baba Yaga universe is incredibly exciting. Although Everett doesn’t confirm discussions with John Wick creator Chad Stahelski or Lionsgate, it’s hard not to be optimistic given how secretive he’s being.

John Wick already mixes elements of Westerns and samurai films, particularly the idea of a solitary fighter overcoming difficult challenges – a theme common to both. But exploring these influences more deeply, maybe in a prequel focusing on the broader world of assassins, would undoubtedly get all action and John Wick fans excited and thinking about the possibilities.

There Is Plenty to Come From the World of ‘John Wick’

Following four hugely successful and groundbreaking action movies, the John Wick series is now growing with spin-off films. This year’s Ballerina introduces Ana de Armas, known from No Time to Die, as a new assassin seeking revenge. And that’s not all – Donnie Yen’s impressive character, Caine, is coming back for his own movie. He’ll be the star, both acting in and directing this new action and martial arts adventure.

A prequel anime is being created to show the seemingly unachievable mission Wick had to complete in order to escape his life of violence. Additionally, a sequel TV series called Under the High Table is planned. And, currently, work has begun on John Wick: Chapter 5 as well.

Currently, Everett is working on The Traveler, which will be adapted from Joseph Eckert’s novel of the same name-a story about “a man who jumps forward in time.” Lee Isaac Chung, the director of the Academy Award-winning film Minari, is directing this science fiction project. Additionally, Everett is also expected to direct Akiya, a film “about a Japanese American woman who buys an abandoned house in Japan to renovate, only to find out it’s haunted.” He has described it as “what would happen if Studio Ghibli created ‘The Conjuring.’”
