The Wiggles called out by consumer watchdog over dangerous merchandise

The Wiggles have acknowledged they probably violated consumer protection laws by selling products that didn’t include adequate safety information.

Australia’s competition watchdog, the ACCC, stated that the popular children’s entertainment group sold Emma Bow headbands that didn’t include the required safety warnings for products with button batteries.

The consumer safety group has discovered that Emma Bow headbands use button batteries to light up, and these batteries can be dangerous if swallowed by young children.

The data breach probably happened between June 2022 and March 2024 because The Wiggles Holdings Pty Ltd sold headbands that didn’t include necessary warning labels.

A total of 3,164 headbands were sold during that period. Additionally, distributor CA Australia provided another 600 headbands to other retailers.

According to ACCC Deputy Chair Catriona Lowe, the Emma Bow was designed for children and sold at The Wiggles’ concerts.

The product was also available from other sellers on The Wiggles’ website and in many stores.

Because the product didn’t have a warning, parents might not have realized it contained button batteries or understood how dangerous those batteries could be.

Ms. Lowe explained that if a child swallows a button battery, it can get lodged in their throat and cause extremely serious injuries or even death within just two hours.

The Wiggles and CA Australia announced a product recall, and details were posted on the ACCC website on August 1, 2024.

The Wiggles are working with the consumer safety organization and will create an episode of their podcast, Wiggle Talk – A Podcast For Parents, to talk about the headband recall and the dangers of button batteries.

A spokesperson for the Wiggles told the ABC that children’s safety was always paramount.

The Wiggles are committed to the safety and well-being of children and families. They want parents and caregivers to be completely confident in the quality of all products with The Wiggles brand.

The Wiggles make sure all products with our name on them are safe, well-made, and dependable.

We’re committed to keeping children safe and providing ongoing support to families across Australia.

It comes after The Wiggles recently settled a nasty court drama with their former CEO.

In August, Luke O’Neill filed a lawsuit in federal court against Anthony Field, a member of the popular children’s group The Wiggles, and Matthew Salgo, the group’s lawyer.

From what I understand, O’Neill felt he was unfairly penalized before his dismissal. He says his bonuses were withheld and he was left out of important meetings, all before being let go without a clear, justifiable reason. It sounds like a really frustrating situation, and a lack of clear communication and fair treatment can really impact someone’s professional life.

He claimed Field had publicly embarrassed him in front of colleagues, but The Wiggles denied all of the accusations.

In October, News Corp announced that a settlement had been reached, including a private payment and an agreement to keep the details confidential.

When asked about the settlement, which was reached earlier in the month, O’Neill’s lawyers chose not to make any statement.

According to court filings, Field reportedly criticized O’Neill’s abilities and publicly embarrassed him during a February meeting with over a dozen employees.

O’Neill reported the incident to Luke Field, who is both the nephew of the Blue Wiggle and the group’s business manager, detailing his uncle’s actions during the meeting.

This happened several months after the company’s CEO raised concerns about another nephew being brought on to help with the new album, The Tree of Wisdom.

According to documents, O’Neill objected to Field giving a bonus to a friend and his daughter’s boyfriend without getting the necessary approvals, and it differed from the standard bonus process for other employees.

It was also alleged that Field then took steps to reduce Mr O’Neill’s roles and responsibilities.

The Wiggles, a hugely popular Australian children’s entertainment group, have been delighting audiences since they formed in 1991. They’ve earned numerous awards, including multiple ARIAs, and were honored with a place in the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2011.

Field is the last remaining member of the original line-up, which has expanded over time.
