The Who guitarist Pete Townshend makes cryptic comment about ‘the end’ after iconic rock band announced their farewell tour
Known The Who guitarist, Pete Townshend, subtly hinted at ‘the end’ following the announcement of the band’s final tour.
For over half a century, following their rise to fame in the 1960s, The Who has declared that their farewell tour titled “The Song Is Over” is set to take place this coming summer.
The band plans to perform at sixteen venues across the United States, with potential expansion to European stages, expressing gratitude to their fans for their unwavering support.
However, before our tour starts later this year, guitarist Pete, now 80 years old, subtly suggested that the band might disband completely.
As I shared my thoughts with This Cultural Life on Radio 4 last week, I couldn’t help but express my sentiments: ‘Could this be the final chapter for The Who… or perhaps just the conclusion of touring across America? As for Europe, we’ll have to wait and see.’
In other words, it appears that the epic journey of The Who may be nearing its end in America, but the possibility of gracing European stages still lingers. As an ardent fan, I eagerly anticipate any further updates!

The rocker previously admitted that he is ‘not crazy about touring’, despite ‘not feeling old’.
He said, “I feel as if I am a diamond with an imperfection.” He continued, “I may be a threat to some, but I embrace the philosophy of rock and roll.
However, as I delved into expressing my internal turmoil through my stage performances, with the destructive actions like smashing guitars and amplifying everything, I found myself quite distant from the experience and didn’t take pleasure in it.
Pete’s job interview occurred not long ago, following the dismissal of drummer Zak Stanley from the group by both him and lead vocalist Roger Daltrey – an action that they had taken previously as well.
Last week, Ringo Starr’s 59-year-old son was let go from the band. This happened only a month after he had been dismissed, but then rehired again.
Last week, Pete shared on Instagram that Zak, who has been the drummer for The Who since 1996, is no longer with the band.
However, on his personal social media platforms, Zak asserted that it wasn’t a joint choice to part ways, but rather, he was dismissed from the band.
In their follow-up post, Pete and Roger Daltrey stated: “The Who are moving towards retirement, but Zak is only 20 years old and boasts an impressive future with his new group and numerous intriguing endeavors.

He should put all his effort into ensuring its success. Wishing him every bit of good fortune out there.
‘Scott, renowned among Who fans for his appearances in Roger’s solo concerts, is set to take over the role previously held by Zak. We eagerly anticipate our fans giving him a warm welcome. Known as Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, they form part of the iconic band.’
Restating The Who’s post, Zak countered: ‘I was let go just two weeks following my reinstatement, and I was asked to issue a statement claiming I left The Who to focus on my other musical endeavors. This would be untrue.’
I am deeply devoted to The Who, and I never considered quitting them. By not making the statement ‘I quit The Who,’ I was able to avoid disappointing countless individuals who supported me during my challenging weeks.” (Thank you all a million times over and more for standing by me through those difficult times.)
In response to your query, “Indeed, I do have other projects going on, and that has been the case for quite some time. The Who’s touring schedule has generally been intermittent or limited in most years, with exceptions being their extensive tours in 2000 and 2006/2007.
Zak went on to share details about some of his earlier ventures, mentioning that while he’s been putting out singles, he hasn’t been touring due to the fact that band members have been extremely busy. However, these activities have never caused any issues with The Who and have always been manageable for them.
‘The lie is or would have been that I quit The Who- I didn’t. I love the who and everyone in it.’

However, on Monday, Zak once more posted on his Instagram to express that his account of the situation was challenged again following a call with Roger Daltrey, the lead vocalist and guitarist of The Who.
Zak mentioned that Roger informed him he hadn’t been terminated but had chosen to step down to focus on personal endeavors.
He wrote: ‘Ruckus & Chaos!! We had an excellent conversation on the phone with Roger towards the end of last week, but it left us both perplexed!’
Rog clarified that it wasn’t a ‘dismissal’, but rather a ‘transition’ to work on my personal endeavors. I shared with Rog that I had been engrossed in my studio in Jamaica for about 8 weeks, finalizing these projects. My band, Mantra Of The Cosmos, was set to launch a single at the start of June, followed by the usual lifespan of around 5-6 weeks. Once that phase ended, I would be fully accessible for the upcoming period.
Rog exclaimed, “Oh!”, and our conversation seemed to naturally reach a pause – Maintaining our friendly rapport and strong bond, much like how our friendship has consistently remained over the years.
‘Gotta love these guys. As my mum used to say “The mind boggles!!!” XXX.’
A few weeks have passed since The Who announced their decision to stop touring after an impressive 60-year career, concluding with a series of performances in the United States later in 2023.
At a press conference in London, the iconic rock group declared the start of their final tour, with concerts beginning in July.
