The Wheel of Time star Dónal Finn will play young Moriarty in Young Sherlock
As a hardcore Sherlock Holmes fan with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia as I read about Amazon’s new show “Young Sherlock.” I remember the first time I read “A Study in Scarlet” back in the late ’80s, and it’s been a rollercoaster ride ever since.
The initial tale featuring the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes, penned by Arthur Conan Doyle under the title “A Study in Scarlet,” was released all the way back in 1887. Due to Sherlock Holmes having entered the public domain, numerous individuals are free to produce adaptations of his story. For instance, BBC aired a critically acclaimed series titled “Sherlock,” led by Benedict Cumberbatch for four seasons. Additionally, Netflix has introduced a series of movies centered around Enola Holmes, Sherlock’s gifted sister.
Amazon has introduced a new series titled “Young Sherlock” now, featuring the iconic detective at the beginning of his illustrious career. According to the official description, “Sherlock Holmes, only 19 years old, is facing humiliation and finding himself embroiled in a murder investigation at Oxford University that jeopardizes his freedom.” In this initial case, Sherlock’s recklessness leads him to solve a complex, international conspiracy. This life-altering experience sets the stage for his extraordinary future.
Hero Fiennes Tiffin has been cast as the character Sherlock in the production. (He goes by “Hero” as his given name.) According to Variety, Donal Finn, who has previously worked on “The Wheel of Time,” will portray Sherlock’s formidable adversary and brilliant criminal, James Moriarty. (In this context, “Amazon family” likely refers to the production being produced by Amazon Studios.)
1. In “The Wheel of Time,” Finn has taken on the role of Mat, a heroic character with a twist – he’s slightly more morally complex than the other good guys. This complexity could make him an intriguing choice to portray Moriarty. The series boasts an impressive cast that includes Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone, Colin Firth, and Zine Tseng from “The Three-Body Problem,” which is quite a star-studded lineup.
Sherlock creator still wants to make a movie version with Benedict Cumberbatch
Over time, there have been various interpretations of the character Sherlock Holmes that have resonated with different generations of viewers. To some, Benedict Cumberbatch’s portrayal will forever be their beloved Sherlock, while Martin Freeman as John Watson completes the picture for them.
Mark Gatiss, the mastermind behind “Sherlock” on BBC, expresses his desire for a movie adaptation in the future. However, with everyone’s busy schedules, making it a reality is no small feat. As he put it to Deadline, “We aspire to create a film, but coordinating our schedules is quite a challenge. You’ll need to check with Benedict and Martin yourselves.”
“Making a film with this team is proving to be quite a challenge for us,” Gatiss shared with Deadline. “For definite answers regarding the project, you should reach out to Benedict [Cumberbatch] and Martin [Freeman] directly.”
1. Regardless if that Sherlock Holmes movie comes to fruition or not, there’s a wealth of entertainment for its enthusiasts in the coming years.
