The Well
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Doctor Who season 15, episode 3, “The Well.”
The show ‘Doctor Who’ is a series that often improves upon rewatch, and the episode titled ‘The Well’ significantly changes when viewed again. Despite undergoing significant transformations over the past five years, ‘Doctor Who’ remains an essential piece of the larger storyline that began in 1963. Throughout its history, the Doctor and his companions have embarked on numerous adventures that took them through shadowy and enigmatic landscapes towards uncertain and hazardous destinations.
The abundance of background information allows the show to delve into stories set many years ago. In “The Well,” Doctor Who capitalizes on this aspect by reintroducing a creature previously seen in the 2008 episode, “Midnight.” However, what makes “The Well” particularly noteworthy is the introduction of an exciting new character who embarks on a captivating journey within this single episode.
Shaya’s Final Words In Doctor Who’s “The Well” Totally Change Her Story
Shaya Has A Full Circle Character Arc In Doctor Who After Just One Episode
In “The Well,” Shaya, leader of the exploration team on this abandoned mining planet, is straightforward and business-like in her demeanor. Unlike other characters who express their emotions and preferences, Shaya plainly states that “hope holds no value,”, demonstrating an unyielding practicality in the face of peril. Yet, it’s later revealed by another character that Shaya’s life has come full circle – from escaping monsters as a child to now bravely running to shield others.
Following Shaya’s decision to remove the enigmatic being from Belinda, she hastily heads towards the deep-reaching well that penetrates the planet’s core. The narrative then shifts to her past as a young woman fleeing monsters, mirroring this situation. However, intriguingly, Shaya declares her ultimate objective was to “instill hope. This shift seems significant given her earlier reluctance to consider it. Yet, upon reflection, Shaya’s actions suggest she has always harbored hope and strives to make a tangible impact as she maintains a courageous demeanor.
Shaya’s Secret Belief In Hope Explains Why She Trusts The Doctor
Shaya Had A Challenging Past, And A Perfect Send-Off
It’s unusual for Shaya to have such a strong belief in the Doctor without substantial proof, given that their mission didn’t seem to require scrutiny and the mysterious arrival of the Doctor amidst the team members should have raised questions. Yet, Shaya views him as reliable and gradually trusts him more than some of her own colleagues. For example, when one of Shaya’s underlings betrays her, she continues to align herself with the Doctor.
In a straightforward manner, one could say: The Doctor is undeniably a source of inspiration and strength. Despite facing immense grief and hardship, he manages to keep his own optimism alive. In the presence of danger or adversity, the Doctor reacts swiftly, radiating hope, positivity, happiness, and self-assurance. It seems that these qualities attracted Shaya, and though hope wasn’t initially important to her, Shaya discovers a glimmer of hope that enables her to rescue the people she is with in “The Well” from Doctor Who.
