The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon filmed in a haunted set: “The crew swear they saw ghosts”
As a die-hard fan who’s survived countless zombie apocalypses (okay, just marathons of The Walking Dead), I must say that season 2 finale was a rollercoaster ride! Daryl Dixon’s journey through the eerie Eurostar tunnel with bioluminescent walkers and toxic fumes was a chilling experience, reminiscent of my own trips to the kitchen during a power outage.
The final episode of season 2 for The Walking Dead featured an array of events for Daryl Dixon, ranging from him crooning tunes to bioluminescent undead creatures in the chilling darkness of the Channel Tunnel. It wrapped up The Book of Carol in an unforeseen manner, as both Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) embarked on a journey to England. However, their voyage is far from easy-going, as they come across a completely new breed of zombies along the way.
Following their hasty departure from the chaos of the post-apocalyptic French Revolution, Daryl and Carol found themselves making their way towards the relatively safe haven of England. Although they were unsure about what lay ahead in this new land, it seemed certain to be a safer option compared to France, where the nation was embroiled in conflict.
To get across the border, they need to travel through the dilapidated Eurostar tunnel, once a bustling railway line but now decayed following the apocalypse. Predictably, the creatures lurking in the shadows have evolved with their surroundings. They’re no longer just ordinary walkers; they’ve become bioluminescent aberrations unlike anything seen before. Furthermore, the tunnel air is tainted, producing harmful fumes that induce hallucinations of a vivid nature for our protagonists.
The cast and team didn’t shoot inside the active Eurostar tunnel, but they did film in a neighboring tunnel that holds its own importance. As director Daniel Percival shared with TVInsider, this particular tunnel is located near the entrance of the Normandy coast, where the train heading to England departs. I believe I was told that it was constructed by the Nazis during World War II as part of the defense system for the Normandy coast.
“There’s a story, I don’t know how true it is, that during an area bombing mission, Hitler’s train was on a visit to the Normandy beaches and British Intelligence had found out about this and they went to bomb the train and they went and hid in that tunnel. So, Hitler was supposed to have been in that tunnel.”
Filming that particular scene proved quite an ordeal due to the vastness of the old tunnel infrastructure. Given its design, it wasn’t exactly ideal for large-scale productions. We spent countless days in there, and the rigging and electrical teams had to lay out kilometers of cabling since it was a massive tunnel. Furthermore, it was shaped and reinforced much like the Eurostar tunnels, which made us feel that if it deteriorated, it would resemble this setting, Percival explained.
Even though no actual zombies exist, Percival confides that some members of the team returned with tales of encounters with spirits of their own. In essence, he says it wasn’t an enjoyable workplace due to these eerie experiences.
It was dark when you turned up for work, dark when you left, and dark inside. But it had an atmosphere to it that fueled the filming as well. It took 20 minutes walking just to get to the set. It was a huge and insane undertaking, but we did it.
Bravo to the filmmaking crew! They easily could have opted for a studio setting, but instead, they chose to capture every scene with an authentic touch. Truly impressive!
