The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon cast and crew talk working in France
As a longtime fan, I must say that the transition of Daryl Dixon from the familiar Georgia forests to the grandeur of France has been nothing short of breathtaking. The change of scenery from the samey forests to iconic locations like the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Catacombs of Paris, and Mont Saint-Michel has added a layer of sophistication and depth to the franchise that was previously unimaginable.
In a fascinating twist, The Walking Dead character Daryl Dixon leaves behind the familiar Georgia woodlands and ventures into the grandeur of France’s expansive landscapes. This change not only offers a breathtaking backdrop but also allows the series to delve into some of the world’s most iconic sites, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Paris Catacombs, and Mont Saint-Michel. The spinoff series The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon has indeed traveled to each of these locations, culminating in an awe-inspiring extension of the franchise.
In the second season titled “Daryl Dixon’s Book“, which is the last one filmed in France, the series then shifts to Spain for season 3. During a chat with Collider, our main characters shared their experiences working in France and what made it so distinctive.
In these filming spots, there’s a rich, creative past that enhances the series in more ways than just aesthetically, as Norman Reedus put it. The script contains references to our ability to endure hardships similar to those depicted in the show.
Indeed, since we’ve moved to a new place, the overall feel or ambiance has transformed as well. The scenery seems to have shifted colors. In Georgia, we were perspiring profusely throughout our stay. Now, it’s quite breezy and there’s a noticeable change in the environment, as Reedus stated.
Regarding Melissa McBride, who appeared in her spinoff this season, she expressed equal enthusiasm about not just changing countries, but continents. She noted, “Many of these locations are essentially becoming characters themselves.” The distinctive qualities of the settings present challenges for the actors or characters, which is why they’re chosen, as some are difficult to navigate and some resemble fortresses.
As for me, I also delved into the significant shift in our filming location, and shared insights on how this transformation originated creatively.
“The task for us from the very beginning was imagining something we could do that would be beautiful visually that would be distinctive from the Walking Dead, and then building characters and stories around those places. Mont Saint-Michel is an obvious example. But even trying to build a sequence at the Louvre, which is in last week’s episode, the Catacombs, trying to think, ‘How can we get to these cool places that feel nothing like a dusty forest in Georgia?’ Then, how can we build characters and stories that justify that and make sense in that world? So, that’s the way in which we try to make the show feel different and new. These guys obviously are characters that the audience is very familiar with and love, so there’s a connection to the Walking Dead legacy. That part is the part that makes it feel fresh.”
The third season primarily unfolds in Spain, but prior to this, there’s a hint of a stopover between France and Spain that promises to be intriguing and thrilling, Stephen Merchant being part of the opening episode as he portrays an engaging character we encounter early on.
The ongoing saga of Daryl Dixon from The Walking Dead Season 2, also known as “Carol’s Tale,” airs every Sunday on AMC. Don’t miss out on the season finale this coming Sunday!
